My dad owns a 2001 Mazda Tribute with a 3.0l engine that recently had an episode of bad misfire. The car is overseas and I have no access to assess it. My first reaction is bad coils.

Does this car have coils on each cylinder or is it a coil pack? I'm not very familiar with Ford products...

Not really. The upper intake comes off and they are right there. People make it out like it is the end of the world, but it is easy on these.

I had a 2002 Escape with the 3.0L. Definitely sounds like a coil issue.
The other problem is the misfires tend to take out the catalytic convertor.
Don't ask how I know ….

Oh I know lol .. The intake is fairly easy. Just take out the bolts tieing the upper and lower intakes and flip it out of your way. Don't wait to change them all out as it sounds more than one of us experienced.

AJ09-18-100 is the Mazda OE part number, updated from AJ03-18-100. 2M2Z-12029-AC is the Motorcraft version. There is a high chance the Mazda one will be in a Motorcraft bag with a Mazda label on it.
