ZL-1 race cars had the engines bought over the counter.
Heck the racers had many engines bought over the counter.

A few years ago I saw a 1968 (I think it was a 1968) 427 Corvette sell for $450K at Barrett-Jackson.
Was this because it was an all aluminum, Tri-Power 427?

The only factory aluminum block 427 Corvette was the 69 ZL-1. 2 sold to the public.
There could be an aluminum block 427 in a 68 Vette, but the factory did not build one.
There was an aluminum head iron block with 3 2bbl Holley carbs; pretty rare and valuable. $450K sounds right for a good example.
FYI the L88s and ZL-1s had a single Holley 4bbl carb.
The 3 2 engines were more for show than go.

My car is the L36 with the IL code engine. It was the base 427; a $200 option.

I had an '88 LX 5.0. 5 speed manual with 3:08 rear end. Black hatchback. That car was pretty fast for that time period. Could be made fast now too...

I have owned many of the cars mentioned here. One of my favorites was my 1970 LS6 454 Chevelle, with 4 on the floor. Not really very fast, never ran better than a lower 13 second quarter mile, but really had that "street presence" that was the definition of cool.

Awful sad how easily my SRT8 defeats them at the strip. At least they can be modded up easily to be 600 hp.

I like the reliability and lack of service needed on modern muscle....

I have the 3.08 rear end too. The car is a blast to drive. The torque is the best part!
