Seems like the price of a gallon of oil has gone up from $28'ish to $38'ish.

If so, why? Gas hasn't gone up...

Or am I dreaming?

Trouble with Iran...explosion of refinery in Philadelphia. And I am sure there are other factors.

A lot of news regarding Iran. I'm surprised you hadn't heard. The security of tanker traffic through the Straits of Hormuz and the surrounding area has been threatened by attacks and the seizure of one British vessel. Military escorts are the likely solution.

Hm, yes I heard, just didn't think it would hit the shelf prices that fast.

Castrol GTX HM 10w-40 - $33.99
M1 5W-30 - $37.99

And that's with a discount because of buying a filter with them.

If you are buying oil at AutoZone or OReily's, you're doing it wrong.

Walmart:
Castrol GTX HM 10w-40 5 qt. - $16.97
M1 5W-30 5 qt. - $22.88

Ed

I just bought Mobil1 HM @ Walmart for $22.88 with a $12 rebate, can't say that is too high, that is $10.88 for 5 quarts of a very fine oil.

With a 42 gallon barrel of crude around $56, that still seems like a bargain.

Yup, still below $50 a barrel. Many folks fail to realise gas is high cause of their states taxes on it

Just paid $19.99 for 5q of M1 0-20 AFE.
Picked up 2 at this price.
Cheapest I've paid before rebate in several years...

Gasoline is $2.59/gallon here as well...

I just got 4 5qt jugs of rotella GASTRUK. (20qts)

for 21.97x4+tax = 93.81 -40 MIR -10walmart grocery pickup coupon -10 chase freedom CC walmart grocery offer = 33.81 or $1.69/qt

Previously I usually pay around 2-2.25/qt for M1 or Pennzoil platinum after rebates.

$50 seems to be the "low price" benchmark from memory... and it's rumored Irans sitting on several million barrels poised to hit the market so I can't see oil going up..but who knows, Venezuela's still a disaster and the straight of Hormuz is a hotspot so that could all change fast.

(am I talking myself into buying s'more rebate oil?...‚)

We might be mixing subjects … but I have wondered if Shell's GTL travels through the "narrows"

Good question.. depends on where their NG fields are. Dunno...

But remember oil as a whole is a traded commodity, overall low supply could force Shell to adjust even their GTL prices because of market forces impacting other upstream/downstream business units (not just PCMO). A spillover effect if you will...

If I were to speculate I'd say blenders (like Warren) will be the first the first to feel the pinch of low supply as a refined like Shell can better absorb/withstand small swings in market prices. Blenders will be forced to hike prices as their margins are smaller than a Chevron, ConocoPhillips or a Shell.
