Was talking to a friend at work who just did a bunch of top end work on his 00 legacy. He said it runs great now but has some significant valve noise. Anyone have a certain oil that helps quiet this down? Just run a 40 weight like T6?

Well apparently not.

If it's lifter noise, try SWEPCO 502 , if it's just worn out no weight oil will help

Yeah, if it makes a lot of noise it doesn't sound like he did it right. You shouldn't chase oil viscosity to try to quiet down something that needs to be fixed.

That said, EJs are typically OK to run 50 wt in warmer weather.

De omnibus dubitandum.

Sorry I should have clarified. He had head gaskets, pumps, pulleys, belts, etc. changed. The valve noise was present before all the work.

You will have to try a few, see how your engine feels and sounds on each and reach a determination as to which one quiets it down the most.

Hopefully nothing happened to the engine that makes it clack and clatter like it should not, that said, I would first try some kind of 30 or 40-weight Pennzoil. Whichever one ends up working best for you is for you to find.

If the timing or valve adjustment is off, and if that is why it sounds not right (does the car stall? Accelerate well? Accelerate bad? How bad is it?) is off then crush and it's not the oil fault.

Pennzoil Ultra or QSUD in the flavor on the oil fill cap.

I'd go with the 15W-40 HDEO of your choice (these days I prefer Super Tech).

As SubieRubyRoo indicated, something like a 20W-50 would be fine in the summer too, and happens to be what I'm using in mine at the moment.

The valvetrain clatter on my Escort is very very loud, yet ut runs like a swiss watch.
Just needs new hydraulic lifters.

Redline 5w30 is built to quiet engines, stacked with ep/aw additives and polar base oil. But, first I would try ucl, maybe it will quiet the upper end. You could always use a much thicker checper oil as well and even first, keep in back of mind of it isn't satisfactory there isn't a group 3 in 30 weight oil that will quiet more then redline 5w30. I would generally start using redline before 75k miles, if not I'd try everything else first.

Those engines always sounded rough, similar to an old diesel tractor.
