2008 Infiniti G37 with 80K miles. CEL is on, codes P0011 and P0524 were found. I wasn't the one who diagnosed this one but supposedly, the oil pressure was tested and was found to be out of spec. The pressure was measured at ~10 psi.

This is a very common issue on the 08-12 VQ37 engines. Nissan used cork/paper gaskets on the oil gallery plates and these gaskets were prone to failure. The revised gaskets are now steel/cork and are no longer prone to failure. Accessing the oil gallery requires removing the timing cover and removing the primary timing chain. The job typically costs $4k at the dealer and $2500-$3K. Although the labor time for timing chain replacement is about 7 hours, most people will quote the labor time for engine removal which is 16 hours.

Unfortunately, during teardown, I found the spark plug for cyl #1 to be extremely fouled with oil deposits. For some reason this was not investigated during the initial diagnosis. Upon further inquiry, the customer said the plugs were only replaced 10K ago so this is a significant amount of oil deposits in a very short period of time. Instead of authorizing additional diag time, the customer elected to replace the engine with a used engine from a 2018 370Z; the used engine only has 7500 miles.

Note: As seen in the pictures, the timing components only had light varnish. However, the oil gallery plate screws had sludge and I also found sludge in some parts of the engine.

For the purposes of this repair, they are interchangeable.

It's sad that the old engine was allowed to sludge. I guess the paper gasket would have failed regardless of the maintenance schedule - being a 11 year old car.
