Hi guys, my 2014 jeep wrangler JKU

0 to 12,000kms - factory fill

12,000kms to 24,000kms - synpower 5w30 DX1

24,000kms to 36,000kms - synpower 5w30 DX1

36,000kms to 48,000kms - synpower 5w30 FE

48,000kms to 60,000kms - synpower 5w30 FE

60,000kms to 72,000kms - synpower 5w30 FE

72,000kms to 85,000kms - synpower 5w30 FE (this report, 13,147 on the report should be kms, not hours. Also i believe the starting TBN should be 10 for the synpower FE but not certain in Australia)

re-filled with synpower 5w30 FE

Daily commute is 2 x 18km trips six times a week, with a highway run once every two weeks. Did a fair amount of low range work on this oil change, had the jeep idling for long periods quite a few times. I ran a quality injector cleaner twice, i don't know if that contributed to the fuel dilution.

I'm not worried about the copper since its normal for this engine and its oil cooler to shed a lot of copper.

With my driving style, I'm thinking stay with the synpower 5w30 FE and change it at 10,000kms?

Should i look at a A3B4 oil like Mobil 1 FS 0w30 for a stronger TBN and a higher SAPS? Im out of warranty.

Im glad i wasn't using a 5w20, that is for sure. Thanks

Copper is not a concern, they use a copper oil cooler. I would investigate the fuel dilution further, because that can cause additional wear and thin the oil out of grade. I do agree with using a 30 grade oil in the 3.6L, I changed mine over to a 30 at the first oil change.

Hi Mate,

I agree, don't worry about the copper, it's the oil cooler.

For our friends in other countries:
OCI ~ 13,150km or 8,170 miles,
Valvoline SynPower 5W30 DX1 is rated API SN-Plus, ILSAC GF-5, Dexos1-Gen2, Ford 946-B1
Valvoline SynPower 5W30 FE is rated API SL/CF (High ZDDP), ACEA A5/B5, Ford 913-D, JLR 03.5003, Fiat 9.55535.G1

These Ford 913-D / Jag JLR 03.5003 oils start life a a full synthetic Euro A5/B5 rated oil, but then Ford restrict the viscosity grade to 5W30 and keep it at the very thin end of the grade for fuel economy. The standard A5/B5 TBN minimum is 8, but Ford bump it up to a minimum of 10 for long life, they also increase the ZDDP level for extra cam chain protection (hence it's "only" SL). This is a Ford's global spec oil (for outside of North America) and it is what Ford Australia (and Ford Europe I believe) say to use in the new 5.0L V8 Mustang they now import to Australia.

Thanks for the UOA of the SynPower FE !! I've been wanting to see one for ages.
Zinc = 941 ppm (as expected over the ILSAC limit)
Calcium = 2166ppm and Magnesium = 742 ppm (Total Ca + Mg = 2908 ppm), so it looks like they have swapped out some Ca for Mg to maybe keep it LSPI friendly, but it's still a strong add package. For comparison, I was just looking at a Magnatec 0W20 (Dexos1-Gen2, 6175miles in a Tundra) and it had Ca = 1571, Mg = 772 and Zn = 813 ppm.

BTW Valvoline give the KV100 = 9.9 cSt and the TBN at bang on 10 and Pour Point of - 45C and FP(D92) of 220C in their data sheet.
So your TBN at 1.9 looks fine, but a bit lower than I would expect for the miles, but you could go further if you wanted to. I would keep it at 8,000 miles.
Your KV100 = 9.0 cSt, not too bad given how thin the oil is to start and you have fuel dilution.

I'm not too sure how Jeep engines wear, I'm sure others here do, but 19 ppm iron looks fine to me.

No need to change oils, this is working for you. You may want to check the injectors, but others here know this engine better than me.

Wow, thanks for the reply SR5. Wealth of knowledge! I’ll keep going with the FE synpower to keep life simple. I think I know why I have fuel dilution. These 2014+ JK’s run extremely hot from the factory. I once saw a water temp of 119 Celsius in summer, so I used a HP tuner to change the thermostat fan cut in points to a lower temp. This works great in summer but I feel it runs too cool in winter now. Think I’ll change the tune back to standard in winter and use the lower temps in summer only. Thanks for the replies

Just in case you are interested you can get a similar oil to the SynPower 5W30 FE from Penrite

Penrite 5W30 Full Synthetic
API SL (high ZDDP), ACEA A5/B5, Ford WSS-M2C913-D
KV100 = 9.6 cSt, TBN = 10.1 , Zinc = 1050 ppm, SA = 1.09 %

Good to hear.

I like the healthy dose of ZDDP that Ford 913-D oils have. It acts as an antioxidant to protect the oil, as an anti-wear agent to protect the metal and it’s a powerful LSPI quencher to reduce pre-ignition events in a direct injected turbo engine.
