Saw one the other day on the highway, the license plate looked Canadian but couldn't be sure. Crew cab short box with very traditional lines, didn't even know they exist. Apparently first produced in 2010, wonder why they never brought it here?

Because of the chicken tax. That's why us trucks dominate the market and foreign trucks sold here are built here. Vw would have to build the amarok here in order not to have a high import tax

Volkswagen has a pick-up, the Amarok, and the US has an enormous pick-up market. Yet, oddly, the two don't marry - VW doesn't sell the Amarok there.

Why? Two reasons. First, the Amarok isn't homologated for the US - and apparently can't be without extensive re-engineering.

Second, it's too expensive for the US market. That's due in part to the so-called chicken tax - a 25% tariff on potato starch, brandy and, importantly, light trucks imposed in 1963 by the US in response to tariffs placed by France and West Germany on US chicken imports.

Chicken Tax needs to go;

-there are a lot of good RoW trucks, including some great compacts
-competition improves the breed

But, I suspect it is here to stay...

Poor verbage:

Too bad VW didn't get around it with "kits" to be built here or whatever. Maybe the plate was from south of the border, it wasn't a long narrow euro plate. The thing I noticed was it wasn't all jacked up like new trucks are now.

No foolin' Anybody using a pickup for work, would never jack it up for looks. You can commute in a monster truck way better than you can work out of it.
