Taillights cloudy (never)?

The heat bonds the chemical and road debris on the headlights giving the cloudy appearance. The rear lights don't face the onslaught and stay much cooler.
Any good polish will offer some protection.
I have a 17 year old car with original headlights that are pristine.

Actually no polish provides protection.
Only a sealant or wax will.
