Are you aware that neither oil is appropriate for your Jetta?

I thought it would be, too. But, I've taken this Jetta to the dealer for oil changes since I purchased it. When I checked the invoice at the first change, it had Castrol 5-30 put in it. When I inquired about it, the service manager said 5-30 was just fine for the climate I live in, and the difference from 5-40 was negligible. They only put 5-40 in if the customer asks for it. It's had both 5-40 and 5-30 in it, with no difference in engine noise or driving ability.

They were most likely using Castrol Edge Professional OE 5W-30, which is a 502.00 approved oil:

There are many different varies of 5W-30 oils; they can be extremely different.

What grade they use is almost irrelevant as long as they're putting in oil with the right VW specification. The only time it would make a difference is if you are routinely starting the car at extremely cold temperatures, below -25° F. Otherwise, if they are focusing on grade rather than specification you need to find a different mechanic.

Ah, thank you for the info. My sister has the Jetta, currently. She took it to her mechanic friend who did the work.

2017 Elantra Eco - Odometer 57,634

30 day/6,148 mile OCI

Out - 5W-30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, Fram XG9688
In - 5W-30 Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Fram XG9688

SMH. Bought two 5QT jugs of PUP, used one on my last oil change and one for the wife's car, and didn't remember to order more before I blew through this OCI, so had to go to Mobil 1 again.

Starting to consider just switching to Mobil 1 permanently. Especially since the price dropped to $25

Take a cross-country tour for those 30 days? What kind of trip gas mileage on your Eco? How much oil did the Elantra consume?

I do a lot of back and forth between Houston/San Antonio/Dallas. Been super busy as of late.

Mileage is usually high 30's when mostly highway driving. Lately I'm getting almost 40 MPG - and that's doing 80 MPH.

Oil consumption/dilution hasn't ever been an issue. 🤷â€â™‚ï¸
