Detroit 51 series 2 cycle diesel

I'm not familiar with the 51 series but I worked on 53, 71, 92 and one 144 for 30 years. The 53's were a wet liner and were junk. The 71 series were golden. The 92 was a power house but drank fuel. The 144 was used in a rock crusher and was a monster. Shell Rotella (not T) 40w was used in 99.9% of them. My favorite was the Cat 3406. That engine would go 3 to 4 times farther than a Detroit before a rebuild but it was expensive when it needed one.
 
EMD no longer produces the 2 stroke 710 series engines for railroad use due to them not being able to pass the Tier-4 emissions certification. Quite unfortunate as I love the sound of them at notch 8!
