I'm looking for a CK4/E9 oil that has a 1000 or more ppm of Zinc. Some oils contain 1000 or more and some have about 800. If it also has an SN rating, does that indicate that it will have less zinc? Looking for 5-40.

All 5w40 oils on this list will have at least 1000 ppm phosphorous and zinc.

List as of 28NOV2018

SN does not necessarily mean low zinc. The reason is that straight wt oil, any multi 40wt, or higher, and some others aren't dictated by SN. For instance, M! TDT is SN with 1100 ppm of zince, their 0w40 is SN with 1100 ppm zinc, etc. SN only regulates certain viscosity oils, which I'm thinking is 40wt and up, neither do I think it dictates zinc levels in HDEO oils even though they are dual rated. Funny stuff. I wouldn't get all worked up over zinc levels until they go below 800ppm or so, for any oem engines of recent manufacture. There are other anti wear additives and the technology marches on, while we worry too much.

The way it was told to me by my Zen Master was that the xW40 oils were able to get an SN designation even with the high (+1000) zinc but now the gig is up and they won't give out the SN unless you are at 800 ppm or lower. Could be wrong. Ohhhhm .

Thanks all. Claluja your link doesn't work. I like the M1 TDT. Then I was looking at Delo full syn xle 5-40 and it shows 800ppm of zinc. Was confused about that.

Stupid question but if you want more zinc why not just dump s bottle of STP in there? They have a full syn version of it too...

Because you want fully formulated/balanced oil and not some "frankenbrew" wich chemistry can fail because you fiddled with it...

Total is a specialist of not updating their specs - last time I used this oil (was probably 2014), it was API SL, but current version is SN :

That said, with modern oil chemistry, high zinc isn't always necessary anymore...depending on application, etc. As already said, API SN Zinc/phos limit is mostly for 30 grade and under.

Thanks for the link. I want it for timing chain protection in a MB 3 ltr CDI with 105k on it. These things are suffering timing chain/engine failures with some of the esp oils. The Stephens Service site makes sense to me.

There's no phosphorus (note the spelling - not phosphorous) limit for 40-grade and higher oils, only for 30 and lower.

OP asked for Zn though - Zn is not measured or controlled but comes as a partner to P, at differing ratios dependent on the ZDDP and any other Zn-containing additives.

Most CK-4/SN oils have Zinc higher than 1,000 ppm. Zinc is not controlled in these oils. Phosphorus is controlled in SN at 800 ppm Max. In CK-4 it is controlled at 1,200 ppm Max.

STP is more of an additive diluter. The zinc and phosphorus levels are lower than the minimum for API SN. It's about 550 ppm zinc and 450 ppm phosphorus.

One version from 2012:

The fact that STP themselves don't give the concentration is a clue by itself. All they say is "CONTAINS ZINC ANTI-WEAR AGENT ZDDP" which of course only means it might have 1 ppm.

It helps to know what it is you're adding.
