Propane tanks are only filled to 80% to allow for expansion.

And Blue Rhino and others don't fill it that full. Blue Rhino even covers it in the FAQ's. They indicate that just like everyone else, they "downsized" their product when propane was getting expensive just like food products. (Ie: The everybody is doing it, so its fine excuse...)

Tractor Supply is the cheapest and best place to fill propane in my area. The ones here have modern pumps that meter by the gallon not weight. And the price seems to float around 2 or 3 bux a gallon.
They post the price out in front and on the website https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/propane-refill-by-the-gallon

BlueRino is over 5 bux a gallon and they only fill it 3/4 the way.

They use a scale to know how much is already in the tank so you could bring a tank thats just low and get topped off and pay for just what it takes to fill it.
My generator runs on propane so i keep a bunch of full tanks around. If I have to use it and only use 1/2 a tank I bring it and get it topped back off when im done.

I guess this goes into the con column of living in a small town. The place I use to go get my tanks filled closed many years ago so I was forced to go to Ferrellgas which $ucked because they were only open 8 to 5 mon-fri. Then they stopped it a few years later and brought in Blue Rhino.

As Tony would say "waddyya gunna do".

Walmart and Sams have tank exchanges for under 20 bucks. I just do whichever one has the automated device to exchange the tank without having to go call the propane tank jockey out.

The BlueRino exchange at my local WM is less than $15. All of the other (non WM) propane exchanges in the area are $20, so the WM exchange seems fair. Even so, I only do an exchange when my tank is out of date.

As OP mentions it's a good way to get a "new" tank. Newer tank.

I did this once at Lowes and the clerk mentioned it wasn't like picking a lobster in a fine restaurant's tank! LOL Just wanted what we all want, shiny paint implying there aren't 8 layers of grey paint and rust.

BJs wholesale is my cheapest fill spot, but I'll try Tractor Supply when my membership runs out. BJs is also (shh) "cool" and usually gives non-members the member price. The tire guy runs his own domain. LOL
