I went to a transmission specialist a couple weeks ago to inquire about a flush and fluid/filter change for my transmission. While I was there, he was pointing out several Chevy trucks. He said that 2017 and newer trucks were coming in with as little as 3k miles and usually around the 30k miles with a complaint about a shutter coming from the transmission. He sends them back to the dealer because he can't do anything about it and it was a design flaw. He suggested steering away from Chevy newer model trucks until this is resolved.
My question is, has anyone experienced this problem on newer Chevy's? A friend of mine wants a newer Chevy van.

Sounds like a case of the anecdotal's to me.

Though, if it's in any way related to the 8-speed I had in my ATS, what a hunk of junk. Terrible transmission.

The GM transmission "shudder" issue is the EXACT reason I decided NOT to buy a GMC Canyon! To be honest, I just don't have any confidence in the GM 8 speed transmissions (https://bit.ly/2J9fIsA and https://bit.ly/2VTG3wa). I find the complaints on the internet far too prevalent to ignore and to think it's a simple "repair" on the part of GM. If/when you have a few minutes, read the posts on this internet forum written by "OldChevyNut" - https://bit.ly/2KWDYPk . He has some scathing comments about the automatic transmission and the fact that there is currently a class-action lawsuit regarding the GM 8L90 and 8L45 Transmission Problems is too much for me to ignore. - https://bit.ly/2VelttR

I've also been told that the V8 Camaros, Silverados and Suburban/Tahoe use the 8L90, not the 8L45 but they have the same problems.

Something wrong with what he's saying … they'd be going to a dealership with 3k to 30k … Warranty …

I have 24k and 11k on my 2017/2018 … smoothies …

Many dealers send serious transmission issues to transmission shops. Like that one.

I've never even heard of this problem until now. There are probably 8 or so Chevy trucks 2017 and new in my immediate family (Dads, brothers, kids, etc. etc). Never heard of this issue.

Crazy how the internet can spread a few problems into a world wide catastrophe

In my recent quest for a mid-size pickup, Colorado/Canyon were on top of the list until I discovered the transmission issues they were having.

Did that have a breakdown of what model the transmissions were ?
This shows the 6L80e is still used on certain models …

The company we are working for is looking for a new Chevy cargo van for one of my co-workers.
Don't know if the share the same transmission as the trucks mentioned above.

I have the 6 speed in mine and have no complaints. Most of the issues I've heard people complain about are around the 8 speeds. From what I read, and could be way wrong, it sounded like they needed a different fluid than they were originally manufactured with. Not sure if that issue has been corrected with the 2019 trucks or not?

For those who say the problem with the 8 speed GM transmission is anecdotal and exaggerated by the internet, all I can say is add me to the list. My 2017 Canyon has been in to the dealer three times for the shudder. The first time was a fluid flush with the black label Mobil 1 HP fluid. The second time the torque converter was replaced. The third time another flush with the blue label Mobil 1 LV ATF. Supposedly the problem was the ATF was absorbing water causing the shudder which the latest ATF is supposed to prevent. Since the most recent flush the shudder hasn't returned, but time will tell. The tranny still occasionally exhibits an occasional hiccup, but nothing like the rumble strip sensation before the fix. The problem is not just limited to the Canyon/Colorado. I drove a used 2018 Sierra that my son was thinking of buying and it also had the 8 speed shudder. He passed. The problem also affects the 8 speeds in the Corvette and Camaro.

Other than the transmission shudder the truck has been everything I wanted. Comfortable, easy to park and maneuver, and gets great gas mileage. If this latest fix is permanent I will be a happy camper.

The A8 in the Corvettes 2015 and newer has had a multitude of problems. A buddy of mine had a new Suburban about 3 years ago and put 3 brand new transmissions in it. The dealership would not even try to fix them. Just grab another one from the back and put it in. He finally traded in the POS and bought an imported SUV. I would like to buy a C-7 Z-06 with the A8 however I have read about so many complaints with the transmission that I don't think I will get one. Most people don't have an extra few thousand dollars to rebuild a transmission or have the dealer do a bunch of flushes to try to trouble shoot the problem. This is a major problem for GM and from what I have read on the Corvette Forum there are tons of problems with these. Owners say the range or ranger device helps but it really is not a cure. Others experience hard shifts, lags when going into gear, and sudden abrupt gear changes as well. What is really difficult to figure out is it doesn't happen with every transmission, only some people have problems. Many Corvette owners only put on 5,000 miles or less per year therefore the car will be out of warranty before the problem totally develops. It seems to get worse as the miles accumulate. I have to think the problematic A8 transmission will hurt the value of any used GM vehicle because I am not the only one who doesn't want to get stuck with a bad vehicle that may be very difficult to unload due to transmission failure history across the A8 board.

I certainly am no expert and have not driven a GM 8 speed transmission .

But , to my knowledge , GM only used DEXRON 6 in newer vehicles ( gasoline ) ? Do not have any idea about the diesels ?

Personally I think it's getting to the point of no return adding gear after gear … sure, thinking back there are several vehicles that a six speed would have made better … but this is getting like so many things … endlessly compromised engineering over "mine is number one in ————-". (by 0.1%) …

I'm happy with all my stuff being 6 speed …

Oh… Strangely enough … all the new engines make early low end torque … and more power overall …
