Recommended SUV/Truck Beater Under $5K

1991-2001 Ford Explorer. They are basically Ranger SUVs, but with a much nicer ride than a Ranger and better weight distribution in slippery conditions. They also have poor resale value compared to the Ranger and 4Runner.

For what you describe, a 5.0L V8 AWD model from 1996-2001 would probably be the ideal find. Very reliable, and probably not much worse fuel economy than a V6. The OHV (pushrod) 4.0L used from 1991-2000 is also very reliable. I'm a little wary of 1997-2001 SOHC 4.0s due to the early timing chain issues, but if I knew it had been repaired I might consider it.

The transmissions get a bad rap online, but I've had nothing but great service from them, even the early A4LDs. I think they are about like the GM 4L60E...you don't hear about the millions of good ones nearly as much as the bad ones.

Explorers don't rust on the frame as much as Rangers, but they do get worse body rust. Check the rockers and quarter panels for rust.

I prefer the 1991-1994 models, but they are getting very old and clean 4WDs are hard to find. Not everyone likes the way the Twin Traction Beam front end handles either, though some prefer it and it's certainly much more capable off road. 1995-2001 has a more conventional independent front suspension with rack and pinion steering, so they have more car-like handling. 95-01 is a more refined vehicle in general, but there's just something about the first gens that I love. I plan on keeping my rust free 1994 4x4 for a very long time.

Not vehicle specific, but watch for your local city, state, or other public agency surplus vehicle auctions. A friend got a nice ex-state forest ranger Ford Explorer for a couple of grand. It was very old for the mileage, but had seen light use and was regularly maintained.

For under 5k, just get the best-condition least-rusty one you can find

Some cool cars worth considering:
Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe AWD
Suzuki Aerio SX or the later SX4

To further enhance your winterability, consider using separate winter tires, or at least the 3-peak all-season tires like the Nokian WRG4
And for both your AWD car, and your Mustang, get them rustproofed annually!

OP,

one more thing:
I don't know where you are in Chicago, but there are some used lot dealers specialized on vehicles 10 years old and over 100k-120k miles. Usually in good shape, bought from various auctions.
Sometimes even some salvage vehicles could be in good shape if they've been repaired right (I drove my Mazda5 for 60k miles 4years already)

Fun: Pick one of the surviving Pontiac Aztek, de-badge it and when anybody ask what is it, tell them "AWD Prius Concept"

Around here, any full-sized 4WD truck selling for under $5k is near the edge of needing to go to the salvage yard.

Looks pretty clean and would be a 3.4L, but it is 2WD.

Looking on CL in your area, it's amazing how many of the SUVs are 2WD. Still, they will behave better than a 2WD pickup in snow.

Here's a really clean looking 5.0L AWD Explorer, but it's in Rockford. Low miles, doesn't look rusty, interior is very clean.

And this one is in South Bend, IN, and it's 2WD, but it's REALLY clean and looks to have been very well maintained. Only 115K miles.

These are probably closer to you, but not as nice...
5.0, unclear if 2WD or AWD: https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/d/chicago-2001-ford-explorer-loaded-extra/6889912372.html
4.0 SOHC 4WD, says engine replaced with new chains but body is rough: https://chicago.craigslist.org/nch/cto/d/mchenry-1999-ford-explorer-40-eddie/6883022583.html
Not sure which 4.0 is in this one and it's 2WD, low miles, I see some rocker rust: https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/cto/d/schaumburg-ford-explorer/6885320036.html

Something that old and price range, you are doing yourself a HUGE favor buying a southern car and driving it home. Too much rust and problems on a 15-20 year old Chicago car, for my taste.

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out, I noticed that. That is completely deviating from my requirements, but I do really like the truck at that price. I talked to the guy on the phone, just waiting on the VIN.

I know with these the coolant can mix with the trans fluid. So will look for any of that in the maintenance records. Other than that, I think the other problem plaguing them are the rear axle seals.

Thanks for the research! I do like some of those Explorers, let me see on this 4Runner first and I'll report back.
