Was in the oil aisle at Wal Mart today and noticed they started selling gallon jugs of Magna1 10W30 syn blend oil which is FCW-Catalyst compatible for $20.46 a gallon, not bad at all. My buddy just had his new 225 Tohatsus installed on his new boat and he wants to change the oil now that he has 10 hours on them. They call for an FCW 10W30 but my question is, is the FCW catalyst oil any different than FCW oil or should it be fine?

There are several VOA's of boat engine oils in the VOA section that you can look at. I believe they all have high Zinc and Phosphorous numbers. I don't know for sure but a Catalyst compatible oil would probably have a control on the Zinc and Phosphorous. Since your manual doesn't ask for a Catalyst compatible oil, I would just give it a pass.

I have seen samples of catalyst compatible oil with low zinc and phosphorous = 800ppm level.
My engine does not have a catalyst and I specifically avoid the spec.
I want the additives. My engine is still young with 900 hours.
