The 195/50/r16 tires on my protege used to be stupid expensive for what they are. I guess they are just a rare size. But my first set of tires on the car back in 2008 or 2009 ended up being around $750 just for tires that weren't no name Chinese. I believe they ended up being Kumho Ecstas.

880 for a set of Altimax Arctics on steelies, TPMS, 4 fake mag covers .Mtd and balanced. I used to buy whole cars for less than that

2018 purchase was 4 LT265/70R17 Toyo Open Country HTs plus alignment $950. That's with the Toyo tire sales and pkg discounts.

Last year...Toyo Open Country A/T for wife's Captiva...$1,050
The Nitto's on the Colorado $298 per corner.

Michelin X tours , (exact same tire as the Defender, just made for Costco) on our Forester was about $480.00 out the door, my Sonata has older Cooper CS3 which were about $350 for 4.

Tires are going to be a big sticker shock for people buying some of the new cars out there. Last year I spent $1200 for Goodyear 265/60-17V cop tires for my Tahoe, that I installed myself. A week ago I spent over $1400 for 4 Coker/Firestone 7.00-20 bias ply tires for my 1950 Chevy 1.5 ton fire truck that still has original tires on the rear with only 2400 miles on it.

About $1k for my truck, Michelin LTX MS2 in 255/70R18.

Everything just keeps going up and up. Will keep tire costs in mind when I car shop again (along with all other costs of course).

I got a set of nearly new RT43's for my car for $100. That was my cheapest set (cost me $10 to balance as I mounted them myself).

850ish for Nokian WRG3s on my old car with much bigger wheels. Included an alignment, lifetime flat repair, road hazard, etc.

$265 for a set of four cooper weather master studded snows, 175/70r13, for my Mazda 323, back in 1997 when $265 was really $265. I looked forward to buying them as I worked extra hard that summer as I had previously spun out in my dad's escort with only two snows up front. Plus another $40 for a pair of rims, as I only had... one pair.

New tire purchases since then have only gone down-- $200 for BFG "Club ADVs" for my cutlass ciera, $200 for Multi-Mile "Grand Ams" for my wife's Saturn SL. Then a whole pile of used tires. Then the discount tire direct deals, and a couple of Sears coupon-stacking bingos. Now ebay deals.

Luckily I've been buying mostly 14" and 15" with a reasonable sidewall.
