The 5w20 and 5w30 TDS have stated "syn blnd" for some time. This is the first time I've seen it on the product itself.

only a little group III is required for synthetic blend or semi-synthetic, so IMO a full synthetic usually all group III is a far better buy + super-tech full synthetic may be priced similarly + a lot better IMO. you pay $$$ for the big name oils + support their "gifts" to racing as well as advertising.

I wonder how much Ford paid for that bit of subliminal advertising?

Repetitive hogwash.

I've wondered if this oil actually cleans better than others or if the "ultraclean" is just marketing mumbo jumbo. (99.99% sure it's the later, but waiting to see proof otherwise)

I'd wager the reference is pertaining to maintaining cleanliness not creating it, the verbiage on the bottle supports that. This is typically what is claimed.

You're about 10-15 years out of date. Most "conventional" oils have been syn-blend since the advent of SN if not longer. The exact definitions are a bit blurred but they're probably well beyond "only a little". Probably at least a third is Group III or GTL. A Pennzoil retiree was stating that the old PYB "conventional" usually was a blend of 30% Group III or more at least a decade ago. If not, it was Group II+ which is pretty close to a "syn" anyways.....

Advertising like that is lame because if you take it literally, they are saying that the more expensive Castrol products keep engines less clean than this oil. If you don't take it literally, it has no true meaning and I believe it really does have no true meaning. It's a psychological ploy.

Absolutely. Havoline "conventional" 5w-30 (in the smart change 6qt box) is 45% group III.

Not sure it is current, but the latest GTX 5w-20 MSDS shows it to be what appears to be predominantly Group II, FWIW:

You'll note that the amount of hydrotreated (likely Group II+ or Group III) base is quite low, whilst the "highly refined" portion is the majority.

On the other hand, the 2014 MSDS for the SynBlend GTX 5w-20 shows 45-50% Group III:

OK, there's an updated UltraClean MSDS for the 5w-30, just not the 5w-20. 5w-30 MSDS:

So 25-50% Group II+ or Group III by the looks of things? 50-75% Group II.

This is going to be a problem. We have many customers at the parts store that demand "conventional" oil and refuse to purchase synthetic blend or full synthetic oils. I always laugh internally because they don't realize the oil they are buying is a blend anyway but now it'll say it on the bottle.

In North America
Only the GTX Ultraclean is a blend according to Castrol. The GTX (non-Ultraclean) is still conventional.

GTX Ultraclean comes in 5w20/30
GTX comes in 10w30 and heavier viscosity

Just out of interest, in Australia we get
GTX Ultraclean semi-synthetic in 10W30 (SN & GF-5) and 15W40 (SN/CF & A3/B3)
GTX High mileage 15W50 (API SN) mineral
GTX Diesel 15W40 (API CH-4 / SJ) mineral
GTX 20W50 (API SN/CF) mineral

Synblend (gray bottle) was replaced by GTX Magnatec blend. Then Magnatec went full Synthetic and now GTX Ultraclean is their blend.
