None of that is really what I'd consider interesting new tech work. Self-driving cars, in particular, are pretty much a dead end; by the time they're viable on a large scale, cars will be pretty much obsolete on Earth when you can just use VR instead.
Makes sense for Musk, because he'll want them on Mars. But cars on Mars won't have to worry about avoiding nuns running out between parked cars any time soon.
