Sometimes, the speedometer acts erratic and then goes to zero and stays there.

Until I turn the car on again.

Check engine light does not come on.

No issue with automatic transmission shifting.

95% of the time it's normal.

I'd hook up an OBDII scan tool that shows live data and look at the reported speed. If that too, drops out, you probably have a speed sensor, wire, or connector problem. If that does not drop out, it's probably the dash gauge (or again, wire or connector to it).

You might have mentioned what vehicle make model year engine etc.

I had a 2003 GMC Yukon Denali XL (the bus) that had the "stepper motor" problem. Yeah go cruising downtown in a 30 MPH zone and look down and it says Zero and two blocks later it showed 90 MPH.

My 2005 Chevy truck had the same problem. I took the instrument panel to a local speedometer shop and they replaced all the stepper motors for every gauge and instrument in the panel. About $200 and back to new again.
