Hi,

Does anyone know which part is responsible for springing back a manual shift lever back to center neutral position?

For example when you go from any gear back into neutral and it automatically springs back to center.

It feels sticky side-to-side movement.

Is there a spring inside the gear selector (10 or 11) or is the problem more likely with the gear snifter linkage (13, 14, 15, 16, 18)?

The springs are inside the transmission. There really aren't a lot of springs involved. When you shift into a gear, a detent ball and spring keeps that shift fork in that position. That also holds the handle to that position until you pull it back out. In neutral it should sort of drift side to side. There may be some slight spring in the handle assembly.

On a cable type system as pictured, one cable does the front and back selection and the other for side to side. So if it is balky to move side to side you should suspect a bad cable. You can test by disconnecting the cables at the transmission end. The handle should then move very easily in all directions.

Great, thank you for all the info, appreciate it.

I will check the cable.
