Sounds like it's hitting the fan at Google

None of that is really what I'd consider interesting new tech work. Self-driving cars, in particular, are pretty much a dead end; by the time they're viable on a large scale, cars will be pretty much obsolete on Earth when you can just use VR instead.

Makes sense for Musk, because he'll want them on Mars. But cars on Mars won't have to worry about avoiding nuns running out between parked cars any time soon.

As much as I despise Google, their goal isn't to be a low-margin hardware manufacturer, but rather, their goal was to light the fire under the hardware manufacturers to offer products that are configured well. The Chromebooks filled a niche that just wasn't being met, in terms of a low-cost laptop that exclusively used solid state storage. The phones incorporated little to no proprietary lock-in. Even Google Fiber pushed the incumbent LECs across the nation to start looking at their own investment plans instead of sitting on their laurels. So from such perspective, they've achieved their business goals.

Google has achieved their business goals. Unfortunately some of that achievement has come at the expense of users who bought into their old "Don't be evil" motto. Did they simply discard that motto when Larry and Sergey retired from the helm?
