My mom needs a new phone. Ideas?

I know you said android, but you can purchase a new iPhone 6S for cheap though ATT prepaid. I pay $40 per month for 6 MB of course with unlimited talk/text.

Whatever you propose have her try in person or be returnable. My mum started with Samsung at convincing of brother but is elated with her iPhone 7.

+1 to all the iPhone suggestions. I've used both, started with a Galaxy s2 skyrocket, then had 2 HTC One's (speakers kept blowing), switched to an iPhone 6 when those released, upgraded to the 6s+, switched from ATT to T-Mobile and went back to android with a Galaxy s7 edge that I ultimately ended up dropping and shattering. Replaced that with the Galaxy s8 which I hated with every fiber of my being. Couldn't wait for the new iPhones to come out and picked up an iPhone 8. I've learned my lesson.

I have VERIZON Pre Paid with a Samsung Galaxy J7 phone. ATT also offers this phone.
I paid $130 for it about a year and a half ago. They have really come down in price since then.
IMO, I think this is the perfect phone for the elderly.
