Much of eastern Nebraska is under water due to rivers being well above flood stage, caused by a rare weather phenomenon called a bomb cyclone. The Army National Guard helicopter crews have rescued dozens of stranded people including ten rescue personnel .County road departments have run out of barricades for road and bridge washouts. Union Pacific's main line through town usually carries about eighty trains a day, but the UP is at a standstill in Nebraska due to flooding. Offutt Air Force base headquarters and much of the flight line and runways are submerged. We haven't had mail delivery or paper delivery since March 14th and probably won't have until mid to late week.UPS has curtailed service but FedEx was out Friday. Visiting medical specialist who come in from Lincoln and Omaha have been cancelling appointments for coming weeks. I had an appointment with a pain specialist for Monday but that has been rescheduled for May 20th. Governor expects we will have to request federal aid as resources are being overwhelmed with the collapse/breaching of more levies and river crest is still to come for many localities in southeastern Nebraska. We are fortunate to have power and city services for now. One nevers knows.

Yikes. Dont have to live near the coasts to encounter very nasty and dangerous situations.

Stay safe.

The problem in Nebraska is the flat terrain. Flood stage for many resident living along rivers, streams and tributaries is about a foot below their front door threshold..

Things are improving as the Herald was delivered this AM. Another fatality from storm announced this morning. Eighty year old women died from medical condition after Guard helicopter and Search and Rescue unit out of Omaha could not get to her location until Friday late. Those who have been in water are being advised to take precautions because of all the animal waste being washed into run off from site lagoons. This has the potential to contaminate municipal water supply because well fields are submerged. Lincoln placed on mandatory water rationing because of well field problems. Some problems are abating and some are developing. No matter where we live, we are all just one storm away from being homeless.

It makes the network news. I pay attention because 48 hrs later, it is my weather. The flood is receding but threatens down river .

For the record, I live one state to the south of Nebraska, and we don't have the flooding that they do. We have some of their river runoff, but not the severity that they are experiencing.
That being said, the networks have ignored it because Nebraska doesn't have the population that the east or west coast has and this is a pity story, not a story that makes a person's blood boil.
That's why the story, for the most part, has been ignored by the news media.

Agriculture loss may exceed one billion. Loss of stock alone may exceed half of that. Twelve bulls killed by huge blocks of ice over twenty inches thick that were sent down the Niobrara when a dam collapsed at Spencer. Some blocks of ice bigger than king size mattress completely destroyed buildings in Niobrara. This is going to be the biggest weather related event in the history of this state. With the farm economy in the doldrums, this may completely wipe out some growers.

The rendering plant are going to be working 24/7 to dispose of all the dead horses, cows and pigs. We have a very big mess in sixty five counties. Hit by the perfect storm just when ice on rivers was starting to move and rivers were high from snowmelt.
