On my 2003 Mach 1, the cap spec's 5W20. I did oil analysis on it when I bought it at 128,000 miles. It was a one owner meticulously cared for car that he used Ford spec's on for maintenance. I then switched it to 5W30 and have been running that over the past year. Oil analysis looks better with lower wear metals and slightly better viscosity numbers at operating temp. By the numbers, I could even go to a 5W40 and it would be perfect. So like most cars that spec watery oils these days for CAFE reasons, the engine actually likes higher viscosity better it seems.

So:

5W30 Motorcraft oil

Motorcraft oil filter

Car will hit 140,000 miles this year and still runs very strong.

Did the 5w20 seem to use more than the usual top off oil in your OCI?
The reason I ask is I have some Castrol Gold Jug 0w20 I'm planning to use in my Toyota in my Oct/Nov OCI next fall.

No, not at all but it was conventional oil. That was my 4th interval with that oil. It did seem to consume a good half quart over 5k with Motorcraft syn-blend 5w20. The engine does seem more peppy with the 20 wt oil. I have some PUP 5w20 and some Idemitsu 0w20 to use up also for next fall/winter. I think your Corolla will do just fine with the 20 wt.

I have not changed my oil myself but had others do it and was sold on a vacuum oil extractor. No bueno on getting the extractor tube to the bottom of the oil sump. My drain nut was put on by some gorilla and had to use a cheat bar to loosen it and the alumimun crush washer was as thin as can metal.

Really? At least the extractor can be used to transport the oil to Pep Boys.
