I got on Wendy's Wifi, and did a search on Youtube(app) and noticed that the subject matter was not showing up!

I start up the VPN, using a Dallas server, and I got much more info in the search, so I'm guessing Wendy's has a "family filter" enabled?

I was researching the late Pastor Fred Phelps. Westboro Baptist Church group.

I've used BurgerKing wifi (when they work) Mcdonald's, Pizza Hut, "public" wifi's and no censorship was noticed. Not sure on Wendy's policy since Founder Dave is gone. I think it is bull that someone is so anal retentive that they do this to their customers. However the searches were within the Youtube App, so I do not know if Wendy's could censor a search?

how do they do this? I am searching inside the youtube app, for videos. The data in the app should be encrypted.

but I run through a VPN and get more result videos in youtube, I cannot see how Wendy's can censor out youtube videos in the youtube app!

Did you have to click on a 'agree' button to get to the internet? If so, you may have given permission to install an intermediate certificate. If so, then nothing is safe from prying eyes.

No one is censoring you. Here they can because you are saying something.

Wendy's is probably forcing, through DNS, that all devices behind their router use Youtube Restricted Mode.

Youtube provides a couple of domains that...restrict content - at varying levels.

So, Wendy's isn't peering into your encrypted traffic, they're just telling your devices to use these restricted Youtube services that YT provides.

I know I would't be able to wait to get home to watch the latest westboro baptist church video.

. Here we go!!!!

They probably limit how much of youtube can be pulled direct through their wifi (block or bandwidth throttling aka QOS) because if everyone was simultaneously streaming video it would clog their pipe. Be courteous to others and try to limit video streaming if anyone else is around.

I seriously doubt they're censoring search or content pull requests in this case, such a thing would have to be constantly updated for a particular search rather than just porn/etc.

Love the outrage over a service you pay nothing for directly, with no agreement made by them that you can see everything the internet has to offer. It isn't like you signed a contract with them to provide you internet service... Sheesh.

And there is a big difference between censoring you and restricting content. Censoring means they are restricting you from saying what you want. They aren't doing that. They appear to be limiting what you can access - which for a service they provide at their cost, their house, their rules. Don't like it, go elsewhere... Or pay for your own access.

was it a wendys corporate store? or a franchisee? if franchisee, they can censor/restrict access to whatever they want to. same as here.

I've not tried the WiFi @ my local Arby's franchise, but instead of Muzak or some such playing overhead, they play one of the christian channels from SiriusXM..

I've been to places that don't allow any sort of video. I'd imagine they don't want all the bandwidth sucked up by a customer who gets a cup of ice water and wants to spend all day watching videos and sneaking soft drinks into the cup.

I pay $5 to do that at Starbucks, LOL.

This all day. Just like if you set up filtering for your home wifi. Your VPN bypasses their network settings, hence the different results.

Don't understand the outrage here as it is Wendy's private network so they can do as they want.

Freedom of speech (non-censorship) and other rights are citizens' protection from the govt, not between private entities.

(fictitious in your case)
The day will soon arrive where you enter a Wendys and police arrive a few minutes later to arrest you, for prior warrants.
We are slowly losing all our privacy. Soon we will not be able to purchase anything without our 666 IPhone/Android.
Remember this 2000+ year old saying that refers to no purchases without approval first in our right hand or forehead?.... after greenback disappears?
Well it's coming to your nearest Wendys within eight more years.

Ah, I did not know Youtube restricted mode uses a different domain, never used it, now that makes it would be super easy to DNS block for the end user. Yeah, I know you should always use a VPN on a public network, it's "downloadable easy" to see or middle man sniffing network traffic.

Since they running a youtube filter, next time I go back and see what Google does in the searches,. I do not patronage Corporations that attack the First Amendment, or promote Fake News.

Unbelievable....in more ways than one.

Speaking to the technical element of the questions - and it IS odd that you'd be at https:// (the "s" indicating encryption) and yet YouTube returned obviously-restricted results. Someone earlier mentioned that their DNS likely forces a YouTube "restricted mode" domain, which would explain things fully: It would NOT be the WiFi or router or anything spying on your inputted text.

Connecting through your VPN essentially pulls you off of the Wendy's-specified DNS and queries YouTube's "normal" domain/ site.
