2010 international 4300 with max force DT (466" in-line 6) complaint of rough running and noise. This is what I found..

I'll snap some more over all pictures later. This is an out of chassis repair.

Soft cam. This cam was installed 1 year ago, but about 4000 hrs of run time. There is very little wear if any at all on the lifters. This cam was repaired and reground from a previous issue. The cam was not rehardened properly and just wore down prematurely.
 
I see wear on the journal as well, even if the lobes were reground, that does not explain scored journals.

Running the correct oil? Or low on oil?
 
Correct oil and weight. That journal spun the cam bearing in the block on the previous failure. The journal was "repaired". The block had to be replaced. It wore that same bearing again but did not spin

Makes me think the cam is not straight, or the block is out of whack. Having spun a bearing once and now scored again.

I think the issue is with the cam. It did the same thing with 2 different blocks.
 
If you look closely you can see on a few of those lobes it wore slightly off center of the lobe and more on one side than the other. The place that repaired the cam either did not evenly spray weld and re grind the cam or it is ever so slightly bent. I feel it is not evenly repaired because if it was bent you would see heavy wear on the front and rear cam bearings. Those bearings are fine. The bearing that was damaged is the second one in. And for those that are wondering cam thrust was perfect.

The machine shop we deal with sent it out. They also did all the machine work on the block, head and crankshaft. So they should be on the hook for most of this repair. I wouldn't be surprised if it approaches 15,000$ to fix it right. I want to start from scratch and go through everything....again...

This truck is a rescue/fire apparatus owned by the city.

I told my boss OEM parts for everything on this engine nothing aftermarket .

The pics show porosity on most of the lobes and that the same journal failed twice. Seems this all points to the cam is the problem as you say. This is unusual as the 466 is a proven engine of many years.
 
The maxxforce is not the best engine with the emissions. The way international programmed it it runs 50% egr as oppossed to 10% or less on most late model diesels. Constant egr and SCR/DPF issues. The emissions free DT466 is an extremely reliable engine.
 
My only experience with a DT 466 was with a Dresser 175c shovel dozer that we owned for several years for projects. Sold it too soon when somebody else just had to have it.

$ 15,000 for the engine ? Is this a diesel ?
 
Yes. A new drop in engine is $33,000. To repair this one with other things it needs will easily reach 15,000 (new lifters, complete seal kit, turbocharger, oil cooler, timing cover, primary egr cooler and egr valve plus some other small things). The camshaft alone is over $1,000. If I fully strip this block and instal new liners, pistons, rings, bearings etc along with machine work it will reach that with ease. When cams wear like this it puts ALOT of fine metal throughout the entire engine and it must be stripped and block must be hot tanked to remove al the debris from the lube passages. These engines are expensive to repair. But as I said the machine shop should be absorbing a majority of the cost. I'll find out Wednesday

Just a few more pics.. I have parts all over the place so once it starts going back together I'll post other pictures. Waiting on OK to pull bottom end apart I'll have some more pics when I do that

I thought I'd update this, it took quite some time to get the approval for some parts I needed and I have been trying to get this engine together quickly so I unfortunately don't have lots of in between pictures but the engine is ready to go back in the truck.

Got all OEM seals and gaskets, OEM camshaft , lifters and lifter guides. Also received a new turbocharger, 1 of the EGR coolers and a new inner timing cover. New main and rod bearings were also installed as seals a new oil cooler.
