What is the most underpowered vehicle found in large numbers on the roads today?

1969 VW Beetle 53 HP
1969 Fiat 128 49 HP

I recall my Escort had 52HP. My wife's Festiva had 50. Her father's Jetta had 55.

Regardless of the fact that all my vehicles I currently drive have been mentioned, the LeMans is a class leader in dangerously slow vehciles

Yes, My father had a '77 LeMans, straight 250 six. Lugging a large 4-door land yacht. Could hardly get out of its own way.

Sounds like my mother's late brother. C-body Plymouth Fury, loaded with every option...with a slannt six.

My father owned 5 Chevrolet Sprints during the 80's, he used them for work. I was passed down an ‘86 four door. 3 cylinder 5 speed, 55hp. 330k when I took over. 60+ mpg during early 90's $.75 a gallon gas made up for getting passed by my own exhaust...

My mom had a Dodge 024 Omni Miser, same car. Same junk. My dad treated the gas pedal as an on-off switch. Luckily it had a stick shift, manual steering, and no AC. Despite the frugality it still had enough parts to break-- pot metal door handles, clutches, and it had a huge rust hole in the door at eight years old.

I've had a variety of slow cars:

1982 cadillac cimarron 1.8/ auto
1983 Benz 240d 68 hp. Was dangerous at 4-way stops because other people couldn't tell if I was taking my turn because my 0-5 time was so slow.
lol.gif

1991 Dodge dakota 2.5 (k car motor) 5 speed. Hauled 20 sheets of sheetrock in it once.
1995 Saturn SW1 would do 75 but the exhaust was tuned to discourage it and the whole car sounded unhappy. Never really took it over 70.
2004 Jeep Liberty 2.4 (Cirrus/stratus/PT motor) 5 speed. Was not only slow it was stupid without any low end torque. Had to rev it to get anywhere.
2005 prius is spunky from a dead stop but runs out of steam merging on the highway, as previously alluded to. It will eventually go from 70 to 85 and hold it rather pleasantly, the benefits of aerodynamics.

My "Fast" cars were a 1992 Cutlass Ciera 3.3 V6, a 92 Dakota 3.9 Magnum 5 speed 2wd, 2000 Camry V6.

Posers were a 97 Grand Marquis 180 hp 4.6 V8, a 2.8 V6 auto 89 Firebird, and, arguably, my 300-6 F150. People expected speed from these for one reason or another.

1978 Mazda GLC with 53 hp. Drove like it had 40 hp. My 53 hp Super Beetle could blow it off the road.

ditto on the new subies, sisters new impreza 2.0 with the constantly variable troublesome tranny aka CVT is a piece of poo IMO. not the only one as manufacturers strive for more mpgs using less engine!!

1981 Datsun diesel pickup. Only a bit faster than my Dad's (RIP) 69 VW van Camper. Scary was trying to pull out from a gas station onto the highway-and you are at the bottom of a hill in Austin,TX. Funny-the only problem I had with it was it would not turn off once. Narrowed it down to the mechanical fuel cut-off gizmo. They wanted $200 for the relay. I took mine apart and the points had fallen out of the switch. Two hammers made the points stay in the hole they fell out of. (probably the vibration from that beast of an engine). Thankfully a woman driver pulled out in front and did it in before the rust did. I still blame myself for the increase in diesel price increase-it started up soon after my purchase...........kinda like my stock market luck.

My 1979 Monte Carlo with the 267 V8 would like to beg to differ with your statement.
It made a whopping 120 HP.......
From a Chevy V8.....
And the car weighed 3200 lbs.....

My dad's1981 Datsun 310 with the 988cc E10 brought up the rear at about 49 HP and 1850 lbs.

I'd wager there isn't much that is slower than the 1st gen Smart forTWO with the 0.8L diesel. It had 45HP and a 0-60 time of 19.2 seconds.

A 4 cyl aluminum engined camry weighs that now.

a 1980 fiesta with the 66hp motor, After about 8 years it wasnt near peak performance, and the A/C was a real turd..
it would overheat idling with the A/C on..

and wouldnt hold mountains in PA at the speed limit even with the A/C off.

but have almost all been to the crusher now.

Slowest vehicles?
We had three and both remain on the roads today in decent numbers since both are now spendy cult cars.
Had an '81 Vanagon, 67 bhp. Took many road trips in it and you could haul whatever you wanted since it had the interior room of a studio apartment. Maximum speed of 75 mph.
Had two W123 240Ds, 64 bhp with plenty of room for four plus their bags. Many road trips in these as well and there is no better riding long-trip car.
Maximum speed of 81 mph.
You don't really need a fast machine. You just need to have a little patience.

And the Camry makes 200 HP... And also gets 41 mpg on the highway and 0-60 in 8.0 seconds.

The old Monte Carlo took.... Wait for it, and I do mean wait......
12.9 seconds.....
As simulated here.

You're coming in 2nd place. I win for the BMW i3's 34 hp when in Rex-mode. I like to brag, its my thing. .... Most of the other posts don't count since they are not commonly-seen current cars on the road like the OP asked for.

Rex-mode? I assume it has a mode that isn't glacially slow though? If so, I think the Smart may still win, since it can't go any faster

I guess you have never driven a automatic geo metro or chevy sprint with the hemi powered 1.0 3 cylinder.

I can vividly remember passing some of those cars that were pinging so badly I could hear it as I drove by. This thread reminds me that it hasn't happened in a long time.
