There are several dams in the ranges to the West and East of Auckland city, I remember some being built, going up with my father when he was maintaining a Euclid motor scraper used on the project. I have just found a photo of when they were being built, and an aerial view of it in action, and a couple of my bikes parked at the top of the dam. You can no longer get to the top of the dams, so the DT230 was in 2006.

So I have to ask why can you no longer get to the top? Road failure? Blocked off so someone doesnt bomb them?

Cool, thanks for posting.

One question though... Do you know what oils the truck in the photo and the two bikes are running?

Yes, an '87, an all time favorite bike of mine, should never have sold it...then again, so was the DT230, and should've kept that too. The same power to weight ratio, one was a train, the other a rocket. The Honda was on Silkolene 15w-50, the Yamaha Castrol TTS.

There is still pedestrian access to the top of the dams, you just can't drive to the top anymore. Boi Racers would gather and do burnouts and stuff, so they just shut the gates and kept them shut.

The fresh water dams were built between the '50's and '70's, but now Auckland is twice the population, and the catchment dams are always on catch up. These days no one has any idea on how to conserve water, they just turn on a tap and use it. Those of us brought up on rain water tanks know to conserve water...runnning out of water is like running out of fuel, it stops you in your tracks.
