There has been the steady 'movement' from 5W40 to 0W40 to 5W30 to 0W30 and even to 0W20 (eg for the 2019 VW GTI).

BUT as of today, if you if you still had to use a 5W40 oil which one would it be? (Which has the most certifications/approvals?)

This is what I've been running in our FXT for the past couple of intervals.

If you want 5W40 (and not sure why if Catsrol 0W40 exists), good readily available is Valvoline 5W40 MST.
Other than that: Motul X-Cess/X-Clean, Pentosin High performance II, Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Edge (not as good as 0W40).

In my shed I've got
* Magnatec Diesel DX (Dexos 2)
* Penrite Enviro 5W40 (Dexos 2)
* Havoline Pro DS (Dexos 2)

To answer your question.. I think the most certs is Rotella 5w40

API: CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4 ACEA E9, JASO DH-2, Cummins CES 20086; Volvo
VDS-4.5; Detroit Fluid Specification DDC (DFS) 93K222, Caterpillar ECF-2/ECF-3, MAN
M3575, JASO MA/ MA2, Allison TES 439, MB-Approval 228.

The JASO MA isnt a legit cert as far as i know..but they feel confident enough to list it.

The JASO certs that they list have created many thousands of pages of discussions all over the web from road bikes to offroad atv/utv etc etc.

The Allison TES 439 cert isnt legit as far as i know either. According to Allison T3 and T4 are but T6 is not listed whereas DELO 5w40 is.

So in summary- I dont really go by certs. I usually go with Rotella due to their robust add packs low cost and availability.

Pennzoil Platinum 5W40.

I own a 2013 GTI and my wife has a 2015 Audi A4. I've noticed 0W40 and 5W40 oils do indeed cost the engine a few horsepower on the butt dino
compared to 0W30 and 5W30 oils in the VW 502 and VW504 spec.

And while I don't recommend you do it, I'm running Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 A5 oil in my GTI for a 5K run.
