The engine on this car is the OM651 and it has a dpf and the scr catalyst. The car has 90k miles and I want the engine to last as long as possible. Car calls for mb229.51 or mb229.52. What oil would you use for better engine protection and better protection of the timing chain? The oil that mercedes uses is the Mobil1 esp formula 5w30. I am thinking that the 5w40 may provide better protectiom for a diesel engine that is also known to run hot. Oil change intervals are every 15000 miles but I am going to change it every 5-6k miles

I have a OM642 diesel which was designed to run on synthetic 5-40 229.51. They have moved to 5-30/0-30 for CAFE reasons (better fleet mileage). I stick with the 5-40 syn and change every 5-7k miles. I went 9500 miles once and had the oil analyzed. It came back with high iron and very low TBN.

My understanding of the MB spec system is that if an oil meets 229.51, you can use ANY viscosity. You are free to pick vis based on your situation.
If you are consuming oil, or drive in high temps, for instance, you could pick a xW-40.
I have the OM642, 90k miles, and still use 5W-30, because it calls for it and doesn't consume oil. But, I did use a 5W-40 once, no problems.
And, FWIW, MB has changed the spec for this car to 229.52. Changes the list of approved oils slightly for mine. Yours should still be 229.51.
Pick anything with MB approval and you'll be ok.

No they did not.
Any MB229.51/52 oil, whether 0/5W30 or 0/5W40, has to have HTHS of 3.5 or higher. There are MB229.51 oils that have HTHS higher than some 0W40 oils.
There is no any CAFE gain there.

With an interval like that, I think youll be fine either way, Im generally from the thicker is better crowd. Im currently running a Fuchs 5/40 in my 642, only has DPF equipped for emissions, and the tune probably cuts it down. Im about 250 miles away from a 6k run on it that Im planning on analyzing, if youve got time. This change, Im going to the Mobil 0/30 ESP Ive had from the dealer when it was 4.99 a qt on sale.
