So instead of buying the defective Motorcraft filter in my initial post I bought a Fram XG3600 in a sealed box. It TOO had a defective anti-drainback valve! See photo. Guess I'll try Wix next.
I always open the filter before walking out the store - I don't buy filters on line anymore. If you don't like to opening sealed boxes in the store, then go through the checkout and then open it. If it's defective then instantly go to the return counter and show the time stamp on the receipt that you just bought it.
Contact Fram on that one ... they might want it back and give you new ones without too much hassle. Unless you bought it in a local box store, then just return it for a good one.
