Dunking new Hydr, lifters in hypoid gear oil?

I am planning to change the hydraulic lifters in my Escort's engine as i'm getting tired of the constant Rattling noise they make.

I have a Haynes manual for it, and before fitting the new hydraulic tappets they recommend placing them in Hypoid gear oil for between 24-72h before fitment.

Any idea as to why they would recommend Hypoid gear oil versus engine oil? i do happen to have some left over EP90 Gear oil that i could use.

It sounds like the EP additives in gear oil for the start up and break in period. I just use an oil can and pump it in the small hole until oil pushes out the top and install the lifters in the engine, much faster than soaking them or trying to pump the air out. I also just use 30w oil and never had any problem

IMO they should also be cleaned with some sort of solvent first, to remove any manufacturing debris.

Naw I would not do that. Today we have break in oils and assembly lubes. Use those instead.

Best way to do it.

I have friend who did the same thing to his engine and simply had them in engine oil for 72h so they would be full of oil already on start up and had no problems.

I would use engine oil , also . Are they roller lifters ?

What I have done. I use oil mixed with Schaeffer's 132 for lifters and installing piston rings.

Soak in engine oil.
smear with assembly lube.

But if it's new lifters on old cam, it often doesn't go well.

I haven't done any internal engine repair, but my brain says gear oil might be a bad idea for the lifters when they pump up on startup. I'd use whatever engine oil you have on hand and follow any FSM procedures, some lifters shouldn't be "pumped up" during install!

Don't worry, i know exactly what i'm doing, i've asked various people on wether it's worth doing and according to people who have done it ( changing the hydraulic tappets ) it IS worth doing and it does make these engines ( Ford CVH ) much quieter.

Put new lifters on an old cam in the F150 at 185k miles (flat tappet hydraulics). Still running fine at 255k miles. I heard it was the other way around. Old lifters on new cam will wipe it out pretty quick. Never heard of soaking lifters in hypoid gear oil. Always engine oil.

It's the recommended proceedure, and you've got the oil...um,so do what they say.
