That's a steep fine for a loud exhaust. But I do agree the noise of certain vehicles is outa control.

Around here, large over the road trucks often run straight pipes. This contributes mightily to the noise trucks make.

People who count on their fingers should maintain a discreet silence.

Excellent! I hope this spreads to Canada. Biggest offenders here are the Harley owners. I ride too, but I don't subscribe to the loud pipes save lives BS.

Many people woke up by straight pipe or Harley would be happy to sleep in at 5am.

California was famous for being a coded law state. That meant you could get away with doing some real nonsense in certain circumstances as shown in the video below.

Famous old clip.

Finally, better late than never.
2-3 years ago when my daughter was an infant, the retards drove me nuts. Every night, retards with their loud exhaust Imprezzas and Evos would purposely try to trigger every car alarm on our street (25 mph speed limit). It woke my daughter up, and then another hour of lost sleep trying to get her to sleep, retards drive by again > joy again. I was giving serious thought to going out there and putting a brick through one of their windshields.

This was also a problem in the 60s and 70s with hot rodders. Municipalities would fine loud exhaust violators but those fines were not equal to $1000.

A lot of people have total disregard for others.

I was going to post exactly this clip, just to point out how absurdly stupid this kind of thing is. I think a $1000 fine is completely in line for people who pull this B.S.

.. and then there's this kind of annoyance..

The problem is how will they enforce it? Will they equip every police vehicle with decibel meters?

My take is that if you're over the 95dB threshold then you're probably either an (edit-mod) or using your exhaust as an angry inch or low T compensator...in either case fine them. If you live in a state that's approaching 40 million people you can get extremely tired of the self-entitled in many areas of life. If they don't care and think it's cool to have a 110 dB exhaust then I don't care either if they fine them $1000 or impound the vehicle. IMO, that's more (edit-mod) elimination and quality of life restoration than draconian state law.

My truck has a 3 inch flowmaster on it. It was a real under powered turd with the stock muffler.

AS an ex-Southern Californian I would agree. It's the same thing if your blasting your radio as well. It might be a 95db law as well. There are also laws on the books about how dark your tinted windows can be for both side windows of the front seats. This was done to protect law enforcement. Here in Utah-we have such laws bu they are not widely enforced. So-in a parking lot when you can't see the other driver through the windows-it's very tough to acknowledge right-of way.

I agree in principle. I hate having to stop conversation while some yayhoo drives by showing how cool he is. My bigger beef is with a lot of motorcycle riders.

$1000 is a bit much. I doubt anyone will write that kind of ticket. Make it $100 and start handing them out.

Kind of like our litter law. I never heard of anyone getting a $500 for littering, yet we have litter all over the place.

Only applies to modified exhaust, louder than normal factory exhaust is still okay it seems. It’s possible to have modified exhaust and not be obnoxious.

Agreed. We have Apartments nearby and they go blasting up the cross street to ours and it echos off the buildings. Seems they go by at Midnight and 5am. mad

Miami Beach is strict with idiots on motorcycles revving their engines.

Tourists complain about the noise.

There was a product that was developed in Canada called "The Noise Snare". Basically a "sound" version of photo radar.

Problem is, prosecutions were very difficult and I don't know if a single one actually succeeded in securing a conviction.

ON sound systems they put in a distance measurement. Something like 95db within 200 feet...or something like that.

Laws are usually written to be enforceable-but they do miss now and again.

It always makes me laugh when people go to Miami Beach expecting peace and quiet.

My Chevy SS, Camaros and others have a bimodal exhaust. A flip of a switch make some good noise. I hope not ticket worthy sounds...but since it is “stock”, no ticket.... or at least a sound defense at court?

I did not hear about the new law, but it will be hard to enforce, at least in Silicon Valley.
The police have too much to do as it is.
For example, the commuter lanes are clogged with cheats; they don't even care.

As for the price, well if you do get busted, when you add on court costs, etc, it will certainly be waaaaaay more.

First we rid drinking straws and now exhausts. Next they complain because nobody wants to live there and they have no one to over tax.

For example, the commuter lanes are clogged with cheats; they don't even care.

As for the price, well if you do get busted, when you add on court costs, etc, it will certainly be waaaaaay more.

Yep. It is going to cost more than $1000 every single time. I heard that if owner gets a ticket before, owner just have to go fix own and show officer and done. But now $1000 fine and they have to go thru state referee to check vehicles and they are right to put your car back to oem or impound.

Hope we get that here soon, a moron on our little circle was a real treat leaving for his early Sunday morning rides as he revved his ridiculous Harley while the rest of the neighborhood tried to sleep.
I think his body finally fell apart from the various ways he abused it and he doesn't seem to ride much anymore, thank goodness.
This was the kind of guy who thought it was great fun to hold a fireworks show late on school nights and would then be outraged when neighbors called the police (not me, I just yelled at him out the front door and he actually stopped a few times).
We tried to get along with them because our kids liked playing together, but we have no reason to even look at them anymore and I am glad for that.

Indeed … all I drive is quiet …but trucks and HD’s zoom around here at 150 dB while teenagers get tickets for car stereo (same location of Friday night lights band) …

Not always - those rice rockets have loud one's too and so are the Honda Civics with the huge mufflers in the back that are loud and sound like they are going 100mph when they are only doing 30mph.

Famous old clip.

(( Edited - Whistle tip video ))

I was going to post exactly this clip, just to point out how absurdly stupid this kind of thing is. I think a $1000 fine is completely in line for people who pull this B.S.

.. and then there's this kind of annoyance..

OMG. These things sound like a 60 Falcon 144 without a muffler.

Luckily for me, those things kinda fell out of style around me. I really don't see them like I use too.

Around here, large over the road trucks often run straight pipes. This contributes mightily to the noise trucks make.

Couple that with a Jake Brake and things get, ahem, harmonic.

The police have too much to do as it is.

It will be hard to enforce. Generally PD are having hard time hiring, and priorities are somewhere else. Here in Colorado Springs PD is constantly 150-200 people short. When I lived in San Diego it was similar problem.

Usually, local residents complain about a repeat offender and then the local police will then wait for this offender to show up, and ticket him.

I replied to political comment, since I am sick of every time we have a topic about something in CA or similar states, someone has to drop "liberal" bomb or some similar thing.
Easy to find. You can write here, you can search on the Google.
