The Hyundai Elantra I feel is a nicer car all around and I have personally pulled off 51.5 average mpg on a 50 some mile round trip according to the dash readout. That was on non highway roads with hills and the ac on the entire time plus a passenger for 1/2 of that trip. I work for a rental company so I get allot of seat time in various vehicles and while I like the focus I think the Elantra is smoother quieter and I'm sure quicker than the 1.0 focus. I'm not sure what engine the Elantra had.

In 2017 most of the Elantra's came with the 2.0 Atkinson MPI engine. My 2017 SE will get mid-40's on Interstate at 70 mph with lots of hills and some country roads. The 6 speed automatic is very smooth. Mine was $15k new. Seat could be better which may be an issue with a commute.

If you want a comfortable highway cruiser, 37 mpg, that's cost effective look at a 15' and newer Sonata.

Don't want a cvt and no manual transmissions around me for 250 miles

Then it's a good thing they all have traditional 6-speed automatics.
