Honda and 2 different Frams

I've been using Fram filters for years but the last oil change on my Accord finally got me thinking - why does Fram spec the 3593a for my Accord and 7317 for my Pilot? The dealer parts counter only sells A01/A02 for both cars. The OEM resembles the 7317 in shape and size, so what's the need for the short & stubby 3593a?

Had a similar problem with a subaru and when I went to the dealer he told me, that it depended on the amount of space around the engine, since the same engine was used in different models, use the biggest filter that will fit or go with original size.
 
Your 02 Accord is right on the borderline of the change over from the 3593a/9688, 14459, 5/1334 to the 7317, 14610, 5/7356 size. Example, 2001 Honda Civic started specing the 7317 (and equivalents) size, 2000 Civic specs 3593a/9688 size.

The " short, stubby" actually is somewhat larger overall, (greater oil volume), than the 7317. That said, 7317 can be used in it's place. The aftermarket manufacturers are going to recommend the OEM size, likely as a matter of CYA. Honda otoh, has no such concern selling only the 7317 size.

That said, many quick lubes and indies use the 'shorty' 6607 in place of the longer 7317 and the 3593a, 14459.

Now it makes sense why when using a Fram on the Accord, I end up needing to add 5 qts to get the dipstick to the full mark (spec is 4.5). With the OEM or Purolator/Bosch, 4.5 gets me right on the money.

Sayjac- I am not sure I am following your logic. I have in my hands a cut open Fram Ultra 6607 and an intact Fram Ultra 7317 , and the 7317 is 40 or 50% longer than the 6607. It clearly has more internal volume.

The OP refers/referred to the 3593a/9688 as the (his term) "Short & Stubby" as compared to the 7317. The former is slightly shorter than the 7317, but with a greater diameter and slightly greater oil volume.

I brought up the 6607 which I call the 'shorty' because it's ~3/4" shorter than the 7317, same diameter.

So the short&stubby reference was the OP talking about the larger 3593a.
