This is a VW filter manufactured by MH for VW, even has the Mann number on the can.

Looks great for for the miles as it should since the vehicle only has 25,000 miles. I don't know why the filters have to be so expensive since they don't look a whole lot different than anything else out there.

Likely the stupid male thread end and check valve they have.

My choice for this application would be the M1-404A because the price is about the same but is good for 20k miles. This is one of those cars where I would only change the filter every other OCI because the filters are so expensive

The Fram Ultra is over $30, maybe you could get one of those and replace it every 5 years! Even from Rock Auto it's over $25

You can get a case of 12 Frams on eBay for $60, so it's $5 each, or there's this cheap Super Auto filter for $55/case, with an option to submit a best offer to make the price even less. If they take $48 for the case, then that is a good deal since that would be $4/filter.

AAP and Autozone price the M1-404 like all other M1 spin-on cans, so they are included in the oil change deals for the same price. The best thing to do is get the M1 oil + M1 filter deal at AAP with the M1-404

There is a Purolator Boss available for this engine, but Purolator isn't known for their quality, and the boss has ADBV tearing problems. Otherwise, AAP has it for $16.99 regular price (half the price of the Fram Ultra), and with a promo code, you can get it for even less. It is frequently included in AAP's oil change deals, too.

RockAuto has the Fram Ultra for $22.79, which is less than $25, not over.

It's still a $18 filter at WalMart. The standard Mann filter (which is the OEM) is good for up to 30,000 km flexible service interval, if it was configured for it.

The Mobil 1 20,000 mile claim …. look at their warranty terms:
Champion Laboratories, Inc. provides this limited warranty to the original purchaser who use Mobil 1â„¢ Extended Performance oil filter products manufactured or sold by Champion Laboratories, Inc., which are warrantied to be free from defects in material and workmanship for the duration of the original equipment recommended change interval.

For part numbers without "A" suffix (e.g., M1-110) - Up to 1 year or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first, when combined with a fully synthetic motor oil designed for your intended oil change interval.
For part numbers with "A" suffix (e.g., M1-110A) - Up to 1 year or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first, when combined with a fully synthetic motor oil designed for your intended oil change interval

Mobil and Champ labs will argue since one didn't use the Mobil 1 Annual Protection oil (say, if you used Mobil 1 0w40 Euro car formula instead), in conjunction with the Mobil 1 A-filters, the 20,000 mile filter life is void, as it should be replaced in accordance to the original equipment change interval (10,000 miles).

You can get a 10-pk of Mann filters for $107.50, https://www.ecstuning.com/b-mann-parts/oil-filter-pack-of-10/06j115403c~man10/ which makes it $10.75 per filter, so it's really not that expensive, if you know where to shop.

https://www.shopdap.com/catalog/pro...udi-2-0-t-tsi-oil-filter/category/24631/ $9.59 per oil filter.

Good ole Rockauto has them for $9.78 a filter

That bold part is pretty much standard language on the warranty on any brand of oil filter ... they always throw in the "per the original equipment recommended change interval". So the only time a "20K mile filter" would still be under warranty (or that the filter maker would pay for any engine damages due to failure) for 20K miles is if the vehicle manufacuter's manual said it was OK to run an oil filter for 20K miles.

Not including shipping, which is a few dollars. Once you add the shipping, it crosses the $25 threshold. However, there are a couple of them on eBay for under $20

Also, the XG10600 is made in China now

The 0w40 should be fine since the FSS can suggest an OCI that long

That is still more than double the price of the ones I saw on eBay

Mobil 1 0w40 FS no longer has the 503.01 certification, which was dropped along with the BMW LL-01 with the reformulation for FS. 503.01 is only suggested by Mobil 1. Also, to get FSS, it requires the oil temperature sensor and the control module coded to FSS. 30,000 km is also the best case scenario, if the oil temperature gets high enough and for long enough to warrant it. FSS will tell you to do a shorter OCI if your driving conditions call for it. FSS is not guarantee for 30,0000 km OCI.

Also very likely Champ Labs and Exxon-Mobil won't agree with your rationale.
