Hi all, First post but have spent a lot of time lurking in the background. Just wanted to share the results of my Blackstone UOA on my wife's 2015 BMW 328i X-drive using Pennzoil Platinum 5/40 Euro. I changed the oil when we first bought it and have driven 6200 miles in the past year. She drives nice and easy but I beat it like a rental. I used PP 5/40 Euro again for this oil change and will most likely stretch the OCI out to 7500-8000 miles. Advance Auto had a great price on this oil, 5qts for $25. Thanks for looking.

First of all

Nice looking UOA compared to Universal averages. What filter did you use last time and for the current oil change? Additionally what is the oil change interval specified by BMW for this application?

I used a K&N oil filter for about 4000 miles when the o-ring started leaking then switched to a Carquest filter for the remainder of the run. I again purchased a Carquest filter for this OCI since its made in Germany vs. the Mann filter being made in Mexico. I believe the BMW suggested OCI is probably around 7500 miles. I only changed it at 6200 because 1 year had elapsed. The N20 engine is supposed to be fairly hard on oil due to the higher temps. First BMW we have owned and proceeding with caution. LOL.

KV100 went from 13.3 cSt to 11.28 at the end. I wouldn't expect a 5w40 to shear that much. A 0w40 with a lot of VIIs maybe, but not a 5w40.
Also, flashpoint dropped from 419 to 395F. Likely some fuel getting past the rings on this turbo 4, something seen a lot on turbo-GDI engines of other makes, and many times in huge amounts on those.

This Euro oil has rather poor TBN retention IMHO.
Anyway 8000 miles is probably doable, I suppose.

The quart bottles I bought at Advance Auto were silver and had the Ferrari logo on the front and approval on the back label.

Yes, how quaint is that ..... "This amp goes to 11"

High calcium and low ZDDP (for a 40 grade) maybe not the best long term choice for a DI engine.[/quote

There are very few 5/40 LL-01 oils available. Do you know of one that has lower calcium, higher magnesium and the same or better dose of molybdenum? Thanks.

The iron bothers me regardless of what the universal averages are, seems high to me. Possible engine is still breaking in at 32,000 but at 6200 miles I like to see iron in the teens. Then again, this may be normal for a BMW.

Looks like pretty high fuel dilution IMHO - may want to keep an eye on that. See Oil Film Movies post above.
If you want a real fuel dilution measurement, send your next sample to Polaris/Oil Analyzers (Blackstone can't measure fuel dilution, in case you weren't aware of that).

You don't want to extend OCI too much if you have what appears to be a significant amount of fuel in your oil.

Can you provide more info on your claim that Blackstone can't measure fuel? I'm about to send my sample out and Fuel Dilution is one of my concerns.

Is there a thread about this?

Fuel dilution can be calculated with Blackstone reports.

Also you are posting like the OEM did not factor fuel dilution into the equation. Direct injection has been in major production for two decades dilution has been factored and the engines have and will continue to have long life spans no matter if us amateurs like it or not.

11+ cst is fine with me, fuel or no fuel. In this case dave1251 is right. The euro oil viscosities definitely take into account DI and dilution. Not so sure they do in North America though
