Something I never would have thought of, but if I ever needed to make an existing hole bigger with a hole saw, I had to resort to hacking away at it to make it bigger after cutting out the 1/4 inch pilot hole. But, you can simply use the smaller hole saw as a pilot screwed on to your arbor inside the size you want.

If that works, great, I'll have to look at my arbors...

Many arbors won't allow this.

It's a cool trick, though!!!!!

Of course for any bigger hole saw projects, you must have a good arbor.

If your arbor doesn't allow then just screw a 3/4" thick piece over your existing hole. Then run the larger hole saw thru. The 3/4" piece acts as a guide.

This works pretty good, also for doing "bites" out of a piece.

Here's another option, Starrett calls it an "Oops Arbor".
