Since I have a 2018 Jetta instead of a '19 Jetta, and the '18 Jetta recommends VW 502 00 and/or VW 504 00 approved oils, which viscosity grade? The owners manual said that it was filled with 0w30 or 5w30, but when I went to the auto parts shop, they said VW recommended 5w40 for the '18 Jetta with the 1.4t engine. Did I miss something? Was there a technical service bulletin issued by VW? I'm sure this topic was covered before since I'm new here on BITOG, and I read that the '19 Jetta now recommends VW 508 00/509 00 oil, which is not for the '18 Jetta. Any answers are appreciated. Thanks.

If you choose a 504.00 oil then you're going to get a 5W-30 viscosity.

If you choose a 502.00 then your options open up considerably for 0W-30 up to 5W-40 and a few grades in between. Just be certain that the 502.00 rating is specifically mentioned on the product.

The 508.00 is a 0W-20 grade and no where near the other two specifications.

I'm personally a fan of 5W-40 502.00 oil.

What does the sticker under the hood recommend? It's the correct answer for your car.

Stick to a 502 00 or 504 00 oil, viscosity doesn't matter.

My sister uses 5w40, 502 00 Castrol oil in her 2017 1.4T, but she lives in Atlanta, GA. If I were you up in Michigan I would use 502 00 5w30.

Our 2018 Jetta 1.8T specs 502.00 oil. There are many different grades from 5w30 to 0w40 that fall in that 502.0 spec, as long as you use that spec you are good though. I choose to use Castrol 0w40 and that's what I would recommend you use. It's top notch.

Am I the first one to say it?

My manual says 5W-30 or 5w-40. Any 502 oil if you cannot find those weights in your area. I was running 0-40 last year.

The dealer up here doesn't even carry 502 anymore, its all 504 and later. There is no need for full saps oil today in the USA. I run the 504 0w30 in an old AEG and newer 2.0T engine in an R spec, they sure turn over a lot faster when the temps drop.

So your dealer is putting 504 in the older VWs ?

THAT is what pulls me to VW 504 oils, though they don't grow on trees here in the Midwest they can be found. And they tend to be more expensive but that doesn't deter me within reason.

Trav, what kind of length of OCI's are you doing on 504 without issue? I am running Shell V-Power Premium only, so I think I would be good with a VW 504.

KC. Running 1 year or about 7K whichever comes first. Everything clean and nice inside, nothing unusual on the magnetic drain plug or in the filters.

Kjmack. 99 2.0 slow, 2004 2.0 slow, 2004 R32, 2015 R spec Beetle with about 260 HP and a few others like the 2.5 and a stone old 1.6 golf. No problems with any of them.

Edit: All of these use to run on Castrol or M1 0w40, without issue. Cold starting is definitely better in winter and the engines feel a little more agile by the worthless butt dyno.
I forgot to mention that I also use it in Honda 3.5/3.7, Nissan 3.5. all Audi engines and more.

I dont care what people say about the Beetle , the last body update looks real good to me . Kinda has some 911 lines in my opinion

Keep in mind, if you don't have the 10 ppm Low Sulfur gas in your area and you're using 504 with the 10,000 mile OCI, it's a bad idea, not enough TBN.

If you searched around you might stumble on hundreds of topics, but since you asked, use Castrol 0W40. $24 in Wal Mart and probably best VW502.00 oil.
