Yes. In this copy of the Afton handbook if you look at page 120 it is there. This handbook is somewhat out of date though so shouldn't be relied on for the latest information.

Yes, but it isn't in 2012. If i undestand well, you are saying that it is again in 2017.

i think before 6-7(???maybe) years there was no 10W-40 with mb229.3 or vw502. Motul claims that 6100 SYNERGIE+ 10W-40 is the first lubricant in the world to
be MB 229.3 approved in SAE 10W-40 viscosity grade. I don't know exactly when that happened.

10W-40 included in VW50200/50500 list (14/9/18):
Addinol High Star, Avista Motor Gold Superior SN, Castrol Magnatec R, Cepsa XTAR, Chevron Havoline Extra, Chevron Havoline Formula, Comma Eurolite, DS Premium, Elf Evolution 700 ST, Elf Evolution 700 STI, Elf Evolution 700 Turbo Diesel, Eni i-Sint, Feu Vert, Fina First 300, Fuchs Titan Syn MC, Fuchs TITAN SYN PRO GAS, Galp Formula Energy, Gulf Super S, INA Delta Sint, Mitan Alpine TSN, Mogul Extreme, Motul 2100 Power+, OMV BIXXOL extra, Pennasol Superior SN, Prista Leader TD, Repsol Elite Injection, Repsol Elite Multivalvulas, Shell Helix HX6, Shell Helix HX7,Shell Helix HX7 Diesel, SWD Rheinol Primus TS, Total Activa 7000, Total Activa Diesel 7000, Total Quartz 7000, Total Quartz 7000 Energy, Total Quartz Diesel 7000, Valvoline SynPower, Volkswagen Quantum Synta.

only 5W-30, 5W-40 VW50200/50500/50501 list (14/9/18) includes.

Just to be clear - it is no longer allowed to get a 502 00 approval on a 10W-40. It was before, now it isn't. Any 10W-40 oils with the approval on them must either have gained the approval before the rules changed, meaning they have the approval until it expires (by time or by change of formula), or they don't have the approval but say they do. I would assume the former.
