Hey people. Have a 2004 E55 with the 722.6 5 speed tranny. I'm looking at changing the fluid soon. Car has 185k km, is street driven, sometimes hard and I'd like to take it to the track in the future. In short, I want to look after and enjoy this magnificent cars performance.

I've looked up the specs and it looks like it needs an ATF with 236.14 spec.

Does anyone here know the viscosity specs of the OEM MB 236.14 fluid? (have looked but cannot find) Reason I ask is that I'm looking at the Penrite ATF BMV that claims to meet the 236.14 spec and I'd like to compare the two.

I live in Melbourne Aust and have used Penrite products previously and have found them to be good.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

That's ATF 134. Check the MB approved list to see if it's on there. There are some fluids where the manufacturer doesn't way to pay MB to be on their approved list so even though they say suitable for such an application, it's not really an approved fluid.

In the US, I get Shell ATF 134 from a shell distributor, around $60 for a case of 12 quarts. Maybe you can find one in Australia.

Not sure if this helps, but my supplier shows these as approved, maybe these are avialable by you that will serve you well
Bilstein 29449, Pentosin ATF 134, Motul ATF VI, and Liqui Moly Top Tec1600. The Febi is the OE manufacturer, same bottle, color, cap, just a different sticker, so go with them if considering OEM fluid at twice the price.

All approved 236.14 fluids are listed in the Mercedes document Wolf359 linked above. I chose Fuchs as it was easiest to get here.

Pentosin ATF134 is on the approved fluid list and is also available on Rockauto. I just used 12L on a W211 722.6 for a full flush. The Pentosin looks and smells identical to the OE MB fluid.

Maxlife can be used in that application. There is actually a TSB out there from Mercedes specifically mentioning Maxlife by name

ATF+4 can also be used in 722.6/236.14 applications, and Redline C+ is the best ATF+4 around

The Penrite you saw is probably fine too

Thanks people.
I'll look into the Fuchs as that's about the only approved fluid that I have access to and that would be through Bursons.

Here an Aus we don't have the large variety available in America.

Does anyone have any viscosity specs on the OE fluid, or can point me in the right direction?

Cheers.

Please share it. I cannot find this TSB.

Doh! I see now that you did! Somehow I missed several posts.

Interesting - thanks for sharing. It looks like Maxlife was mentioned as an alternative, but the slide is quite dated so the recommendation may have pertained to an early version of Maxlife (which is quite different than what can be purchased today).

Valvoline has a history of not submitting their fluids to get on various approval lists, same deal with their Mercon V which is why it's suitable, but not approved for use where the application calls for it. In general, I'm against companies that are too cheap to get on an approved list. Even Walmart's Supertech Mercon V is approved by Ford.
