Just to review, gleaning info inferred by Blackstone are the following ranges correct?

5w30. 9.4 to 11.9
5w40 11.3 to 14.8

Other similar Shell products that cut it close are Rotella T6 5w30 at 11.85
and T6 0w40 at 11.99.

The Helix at 12.76 is just below the middle of the range for 5w40 and a slightly above the max for a 5w30.

Notice 5w30 and 5w40 overlap at 11.3 to 11.9.

Correct me if i'm Wrong because all my numbers are from Blackstone.

I've wondered about that myself; I could be wrong but I think the Blackstone "expected" ranges are assuming that the oil has sheared down a bit during usage.

SAE J300 is master:
SAE 30 spec: 9.3-12.4 cSt @ 100°C
SAE 40 spec: 12.5-16.2 cSt @ 100°C

So yes this Shell Helix 5W40 is a very "thin" 5W40. Interestingly I don't see HTHS on that spec sheet; that is also a SAE J300 requirement.

I undertsand the HTHS used to stated as 3.68 on the older data sheets upto mid 2013.

I recall it was increased to 3.8 however I am unable to find that data sheet.

So I assume the HTHS is between 3.7 to 3.8.

SAE J300 (1999) Motor Oil Grades - High Temperature Specifications
Grade Designation Kinematic viscosity (cSt) Low shear rate at 100 °C dynamic viscosity (mPa·s) high shear rate at 150 °C
20 5.6 - 9.3 >2.6
30 9.3 - 12.5 >2.9
40 12.5 - 16.3 >2.91
40 12.5 - 16.3 >3.72
50 16.3 - 21.9 >3.7
60 21.9 - 26.1 >3.7

As of the latest revision (Jan2015), minimum HTHS has to be 3.5 cP for 0W-40, 5W-40, and 10W-40 (min. 3.7 for other permutations of SAE 40).

This Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 purchased in Canada seems to meet the same main approvals as the Helix. (Might be a few minor ones missing.)
