It is unfortunate that whatever Max does, he's labelled as a petulant kid. It can't just be blamed on his age. As I've pointed out before, almost everyone on the paddock behaves like a petulant kid, this side of Kimi and Valtteri.

Yes, some passion does occasionally leak out of the sport. I remember Senna taking a swing at Eddie Irvine a couple of decades back, when Irvine refused to just pull over for Senna, who was trying to lap him. Ayrton said something like "he ought to have more respect for the race leader". It was an embarrassing sight for the whole sport seeing Senna's attempt at a punch. Racing drivers ought to leave the fighting to boxers.

Sky's post-race interview with the Force Team India manager, Ottmar Szafnauer, revealed his total support of Ocon's driving. Ocon was on fresher tires than Ver, had actually closed on him, and was trying to unlap himself. Ocon had asked permission to go for the pass, and his team approved it. They were racing their own race, and implementing their strategy to get the best finish possible. Ocon had to make the most of his fresh tires, and would have been 3-5 seconds closer to his direct competition had he been able to complete the pass on Ver. Then 6 or so laps later, Ver maybe would have caught and passed him as Ocon's tires lost grip. I was impressed with Ocon's interview as well: he made absolutely no apologies, and showed he's not afraid to mix it up with Max. There is old dirty laundry left from their days in the lower Formulas. Max needs to learn which battles to fight.

They both could have benefited from paying attention which battles to fight. With respect to back markers, while this isn't really a lapping incident, if you watch the old races before there were blue flags, the front runners really weren't more impeded than they are now. Guys getting lapped got out of the way as quickly as was feasible to avoid ruining their own races, just like today.

Hamilton had it right in that same way - which battles should you fight. Max was leading a race that where any of the rest of the top six had some very good moments and was sitting in a car that has precious few wins this seasons. Esteban is about a lap back, driving in likely his second last F1 race for an indeterminate period.
