Hi

I propose to try the full synthetic long life ACDelco Dexos 2approved - 5W-40 in a GM Holden commodore with the L36 Buick V6 3800 litre 2000 equivalent engine.

Driving mainly city with some freeway keeping to the speed limits. No spirited driving flogging the death out of the engine.

As this is a C3 rated oil I am looking at changing it out at 5000 miles or 8000 km.

I believe its made made by Fuchs Australia.

I think it is the similar to the ACDelco long life 5w-40 Supreme Plus. Any comments ? Product data link and info is below.

It's pretty common down here to say suitable for use in the thinner specs.

Some of the HTHS 3.5+ oils state suitable for use in engines requiring ILSAC GF-5 for example...it's correct, not a claim that they MEET that spec.

There are at least 4-5 Dexos 2 5w40 options here in the USA last time I looked. They are available from Valvoline, Motul, Amalie, and Amsoil has a D2 clone as well.

Since ACDelco doesn't actually manufacture oil themselves, I would bet it's a re-branded D2 5w40 made by one of the big oil companies.
 
Wow, I've got two (actually three come to think of it) dex2 5W40s in my shed...and that's not scratching the offerings down here

Oh, absolutely. Of course here, everyone would be looking in the other direction, where the ILSAC type lube is the norm, and one might go thicker. My main beef would be with the A3/B4 bit, but again, that's not so much a concern these days with the fuels we have, and assuming people follow or at least understand the specs in the first place.

Yeah, I would think a C3/dexos2 oil is going to be low ash and it seems weird to say it is OK for all A3/B4 applications!
 
Noting wrong with the OEM AC-Delco oils.But there may be more cost effective solutions in the 5W40 DEXOS2 category in AUS.

3, options exist:
-Valvoline MST 5W40
-Castrol Magnetec 5W40
-Penrite Enviro 5W40.

If you shop with the sales the valvoline and castrol can be had for close to $30AUD for 5L. Penrite is more expensive. These are all fairly 'thin' 40-weight oils. you'll have no issues with a 5W30 DEXOS2 oil either in the old 3.8 mule

Comparison below, for the commodore V6 3800 at 8000km max OCI should be OK with lower TBN
And using premium low sulphur fuel 50ppm max.

Sulphated Ash and TBN are contradiction against each other.
Noack, Viscosity and HTHS are similar
