Approaching this from a perspective of substantial ignorance, I'm mildly surprised friction is lowest during the power stroke.

I'm not scared, just surprised.

Really?? Friction appears to be highest during the power stroke, according to Figure 9, or at least highest absolute value. Friction appears lowest during intake, which seems very plausible.
