I'm removing the injector pump from a Nissan Safari with the TD42 engine. You have to remove a cover to access the drive gear...

I need to see if it's TDC on no1.

It should clean up ok, this is the drive gear after a quick clean.

I'm guessing the owner wasn't too careful about changing the oil...

That thing looks just awful!

Do you plan to try and clean it up? Or bolt it back together and let him drive on...

Pretty common with diesels - it will clean off with no coating as you can see with the gear. Certainly overdue on the lube sticker. I'll probably put a flush in it and change the oil. These engines have 2 large oil filters, one is a bypass.

Not common with diesels that have been properly maintained imo.
I have the same engine in my vehicle. has 280k km on it now.
Always had Jaso specced oil in it and had oil and filters replaced every 5k km as per manufacturer spec.
Always clean as a whistle when I pull the rocker cover to adjust the tappets.
That sludge is a shocker

It was still puffing a bit of black smoke after a couple of months, and cut back the max fuel screw a 1/4 turn....sorted.
