Got the head and piston replaced. Had to destroy the old piston to get the pin out of the rod. Everything looks good so far..no leaks and no extra fasteners (this is my first rebuild). The rod bearings had mild scuffing so just re-used.

The injectors are what you're hearing. It's quieted down some after running it 10-15 minutes. Can't say I ever want to repeat this! Every repair on this car happens twice unfortunately.

The 1.9L which was similar engine design in the Escort we had in the family dropped a valve seat and caused the same damage. We replaced the engine and the 2nd engine did the same thing 2 years later.

Glad yours is alive again.

I should of took pics of the stock seats vs the seats in this head. The ridge is much thicker. If it last another 100k I'll be happy.

The must have revised them then, haven't done a 2L rebuild just the 1.9L swap in our case. Thanks for letting me know. I'll file that away in the brain.

Looks and sounds great! Nice work.

Isn't it a great feeling when you turn the key after a repair like that and it comes to life?

I forgot to plug in the crankshaft sensor... so was more like what in the world is wrong. Oh yeah... Plugged in it and fired right up!

It's dead now. Ran fine around town but after I took it on the highway something happened on the bottom end. I reused the rod bearing but put it back. Guess I'll drop the oil pan and check. I'm done.. this car has always been like this.

Did you put the rod cap on correctly? Did you replace the rod bolts?

As far as I could tell. The rod bolts are pressed in the rod so don't think replacement is possible. Most likely I didn't put the cap back the way it was and the bearing had enough scuffing it eventually went. I'll know tonight if that's what it was and if the crank is toast.

You must have them replaced they are likely a one time use. If you didn't put the rod cap on the correct orientation that will cause this kind of damage too.

Got the pan pulled. The bearing looks the same as when I put it together! I'm going to check the other three while I have it open. Thinking I'll go ahead order a scope that goes on my phone. The cylinder walls looks good on the new piston. Unless there was a piece still in the intake.. I cleaned it and shook it at least 5 times. Definitely sounded like it was coming from the bottom portion.. don't know.

The more I think about the rod cap was backwards, the tabs were on opposite sides. The bearing itself doesn't look bad nor the crank (going to double check that though). I'll pick up another bearing tomorrow if the crank looks good and throw it back together.

Makes sense since it started it after it got really hot on the highway run.

Got the rod bearing and cap put back together but not enough time to button up the oil pain. I'm guessing the those three lines have always been on the journal, based on the line on the bearing. Hoping to get it back to it tonight. Probably should of just did them all.

So I was wrong but maybe I prevented a future failure at least. Not sure on this.. collapsed lifter? Seems to run ok and no metal shavings in oil.

Funny that comes up several times if you do a search. I put a quart of ATF in there last night and let it run for a few minutes. Might try pulling them this weekend.
