For my friends that understand ACEA better than me...

In my 2005 Ranger (85k miles) I use A5/B5 oil. Would you switch to an A3/B3? And why?

In my 2000 4Runner (250k miles) I use A3/B3 oil. Would you switch to an A5/B5? And why?

I know B3 is outdated but it's what Mobil1 HM lists and mine are not Diesel's.

This is NOT an oil brand or oil grade thread. I use Mobil1 HM and that's it.

Thanks to all that contribute a positive reply...

The only significant difference between the two specs is the HTHS which I guess is because the A5/B5 has a FE requirement to meet.

HTHS A3/B3 ; 3.5 or more.
HTHS A5/B5: 2.9 to 3.5

SA levels differ a little.

So, I would compare these to the OE cert or its equivalent and run from there.

A3/B3/B4 anytime...

I use A3/B3 as a minimum guideline because of its hths requirements. B5 is not an "improvement" over B3.

Also note that in North America, almost every A5/B5 oil will also be SN/GF-5, which won't necessarily be the case elsewhere in the world. A5/B5 and A3/B3 A3/B4 exceed the requirements, but a significant margin, for all your vehicles. What you're doing is just fine, and reversing it is just fine, too. The only nitpick I'd bring up is that A3/B4 is a bit "above" A3/B3, but you're already above and beyond the ordinary ILSAC minimums called for in both applications.
