When you're too old to drive

There are times, an autonomous car sounds like a great idea......(driving/retrieving kids to school, fetching a parent that's too old to drive themselves, those days I hate sitting in traffic working a manual transmission for 40 minutes to get on an AF base for work, etc...). Other times, I'm a control freak and have to be behind the wheel and can't stand the thought of not being the brain behind the machine. Still kind of mixed on the whole idea and leery of the technology. Obviously, it still has a way to go before it's mainstream and safe enough.

LOL, I hear ya. My oldest daughter just got her learner's permit. I'm a control freak in a vehicle, so that's a new kind of fear. Wasn't sure my heart was going to hold out.

Since I'm getting up in years, I welcome autonomous transportation possibilities. I'm sure trucking companies are enthusiastic about this as well.

LOL, yea, my daughter has been driving with her learners permit for about 6 months, it is a hard thing to sit in the passenger seat. Not that she is a bad driver (still working on lane positioning and the fear of oncoming traffic), but it is just I like to drive, not necessarily a control thing, I just like driving and get car sick pretty easily as a passanger.

I always drive when with my mom, but my daughter says she still drives well (except she got into her first accident in 76 years last week, a minor one though).

My mother-in-law needs it now, we are getting ready to do an intervention with her to get her car away from her. She got lost the other day in her own neighborhood. Luckily her daughter live close and was able to get to her with the find my phone app and got her home. We are going to get her to try Uber for the times somebody is not able to bring her where she needs to go to show her she does not need the expense of a vehicle, as well as for her and others safety.

I think by the time I get to the 70 yr old range, I might be OK with a self driving option (or semi-self driving at least).
My wife is ready now, she hates to drive.

Do not know . Have not thought about it , from that angle .

My time will come , probably sooner than I will wish .

Since there are no autonomous vehicles yet, it's a moot point but in the future it does extend the freedom of a elderly or disabled person beyond what we have.

Yep, same here. Went driving with my daughter the other day. Wife was in the passenger seat and I was stuck in the back. The back seat is WORSE!

This has me thinking.....some of us are looking forward to ceding control to an autonomous vehicle. It would be nice to have a vehicle that starts out in full control, but gives more and more control to the (learning) driver?

My dad is 88 and really shouldn't be driving, but not quite at the point where we can (at least legally) intervene. He does still (usually) make it back home without getting too lost, lol.

One of my customers is 83. I had to follow him home when We fixed up his 41 dodge truck. He had that old flathead going 55mph on a city street!

Without a doubt I a guessing an app to call a car will exist driven by something (human or computer) and take me where I want to go. Car ownership will be more a service and everything will be more drop off concentric and no expanses of parking lots.

I don't think you can "legally pull your parent drivers license - You have no responsibility for them - unless you are a dedicated healthcare proxy and General POA.
You can COULD the registry and state that you think your parent is too old to drive safely - but they might administer a driving test and mental acuity test.

My M.I.L. is over 90 and drives MUCH better than most 50-60 something Y.O. women I encounter every day, and millenials on their phones constantly.

My mother realized she couldn't drive and the registry pulled her license. I got her an elderly Limo service and she Really liked that. The "Royal" treatment. It was Cheaper than keeping her old 89 caddy running and registered and insured. Great option.

I'm 73 and had my first chargeable moving violation other than a handful of speeding violations in my 57 years of driving. Another accident had completely blocked oncoming traffic and two nice ladies gave me space to turn across traffic to a side street. What I didn't know was there was a right turn lane that started about a block back (no traffic was on that lane). One of the polite women said-- that looked odd, I saw him pull out and accelerate into you as soon as you got out there. I want to talk to the cop. Well the cop didn't want to talk to her and I was charged, Both cars totaled (mine was anyway), and although no air bags went off he went away in an ambulance probably calling one of St. Louis's many fine slip and fall attorneys on the way to the hospital. My insurer dropped, then reinstated me at about a 40% increase. My agent tried to place me with another company and none of them wanted me. I'm now driving a '17 with no collision--they wanted almost $500 for $2500 deductible on a $12K car and I figured any additional claims and take the keys away from grandpa anyway.

BTW-- My insurance credit and claim rating, at least the one that you get with Credit Karma is almost perfect 990 out of 1000. When I look at my insurance site it shows my claim is still under litigation. When I lived in Georgia forty plus years ago they had no-fault and they'd haul you off and take your car if you didn't have insurance. According to the cop, the other driver had no insurance, so it was good that I did so that he'd be taken care of.

I already figured that autonomous cars would hit their stride about the time I turned 80 and I could just crawl into the back seat and tell it where to go. Many of my peers have no faith in such technology, I'm looking forward to it.

I had a great aunt who was T-boned by a guy who ran a stop sign. She was a MD and was patching the guy up when the cops came. She was 96 at the time. My Mum gave up driving at 89.

I had a friend who died at age 90. Right up to the end he was a lead foot who enjoyed a curvy road at night. Unbelievable.

My mother started suffering dementia at age 80. She would go out to go shopping, and sometimes I would get a phone call from a police officer to come get my mother, because she could not figure out how to get home. Her actual driving wasn't that bad, but one day she hit the frame of the garage pulling in. She would not voluntarily give up driving, but always followed Doctor's orders. Before a scheduled Doctor visit, I called him and asked him to tell my mother that it was time to give up driving.....and she immediately complied.

I would appreciate a self driving car when I have to get back from some of my own medical appointments.....such as when the ophthalmologist dilates my eyes. Its a pain to ask someone to go with you to drive you home.

Define too old? Unless I lay it down hard, I plan to still be on motorcycles at 80, leave alone car/truck driving ... Class A will stay in my pocket until I am sure I don't want to run a load again ...

And, if they take away my license, I'll just do what the "immigrants" do - buy a well used beater with current registration and drive anyway ...

Last resort is my tractor with higher gearing and an AG triangle driving to town. It's farm community. No one would care. And it ain't likely you'll hurt me too much with your little Honda

It's a question with many answers. Sometimes the person themselves realize it's time to set the keys down. More often, family or friends have to convince that person that they should not drive.

I knew a elderly friend of the family who drove her Mustang around town shopping and visiting. One day we noticed quite a few dents and scratches that were recent. She said people were hitting her parked car in the mall parking lot. The truth was, she was hitting all sorts of obstacles in her driving.

Unfortunately soon after that she fell and broke her hip which ended the driving.

It is tough to give up one's independence. Hopefully family and friends help out.

I grew up in a small town in South Dakota and one of the town characters was an old alcoholic who had lost his license and drove a tractor which he modified with a V-8. He got access to a car a few weeks a year when a bluegrass stripper came to town with a fleet of fifties Packards (this was early sixties). Everyone who worked for this guy got a Packard-- I did and I was in high school. That was a good summer job.
