Mazda Long Life Hypoid Gear Oil SG1

apparently my edit failed.

at least for the application I listed api gl-4 75w90 gear oil is somewhat similar except perhaps thicker.

I asked Red Line if they made an equivalent a couple of months ago. Their response was "at this point we don’t offer a cross for the SG1 differential gear oil." Not that this helps you, but, it leads me to believe there is something unique about the oil.

Per Mazda:
Mazda Long Life Hypoid Gear Oil SG1 for the differential..

Mazda Original Long life Gear Oil IS for the manual transmission with this footnote "can use API Service GL-4 75W-90"

but there is No Footnote for the Differential..

I'd like to know specs too. In 2016, Mazda changed the recommendation for the transfer case and rear differential on the CX-5 from an 80w90 GL-5 to Mazda Long Life Hypoid Gear Oil SG1. Was there a technical reasoning or is this a way to increase dealership visits?

Some of the aftermarket Miata suppliers list Redline for the NA,NB,NC,ND differential, So??????? My ND was low from the factory, I drained & filled w/ Mobil 1 75W90 GL5. I don't track or autocross, so I feel this is more than adequate.

bump,
im approaching 30 k miles and want to change the rear dif fluid,no sg1 to be found so what do i buy?the dealership says 80W90 but they also say not to change it ever only if the diff was in water so dont know if to trust them on the 80w90 oil.

You should trust them on the 80W90, but it has to be a GL5, not GL4 .

i can only get a mineral 80w90 or a 75w90 full syn,can i use the 75w?
tnk u for your quick reply.

A mineral 80W90 typically has a KV40 of 145 - 160 cSt;whilst
a synthetic 75W90 typically has a KV40 of 95 - 105 cSt; and
a 75W typically has a KV40 of 35 - 45 cSt .
Now the factory SG1 has KV40 of what value ? IDK. I would speculate it to be around 100 - 120 for fuel economy with modern hardware manufacturing technology .
You can use 75W, but your higher ambient temperature may promote whining noise (as a very very mild form of wear and tear) and made worse with relative hard driving .

I personally prefer a monograde SAE 90 GL5, which your dealer did not recommend .

Motorcraft has a 75W90 GL5 with a KV40 of 104 cSt .
I can understand very well why 'they' pick 80W90 over 75W90 where both are made for Ford .

Short answer :higher KV40 for 80W90 , commonly recommended in olden times .

In our high mileage 2008 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring I've used Royal Purple 75w90, Schaeffer 293 75w90 (I think this is a SynBlend?), and now Mag1 75w90 in the rear differential.

No discernible difference between them.
